In my opinion being in the high ranks is better because you're less likely to be attacked. People have higher standards as to how much gold a potential victim should have before they attack. Also, when you're surrounded by people with much higher amounts of soldiers in their armies they become the prime target instead of you. I haven't been attacked in two weeks.

Untrained Mercenaries 0 Apparently, every few hours when I get 5 or 6 general mercs, my DA jumps 700 or so. That's not the thing. If I dont buy ANYTHING AT ALL, my rank jumps at least 7k. I've been jumping thousands of ranks everyday just by training.  |

127 now. Found that if I buy trained mercs I can use daily growth and clicks for spy transfer. Helps in rank growth. Or rather, helps for not losing rankings <_<
