I am planning a couple of changes for these forums in the near future.

The first will be to move to a different host - the primary benefit of this will be more space, more control (for me), and most importantly - a monthly quota of data transfer instead of the pay-per-MB transfer my current hosts force.
Which means there will be no need to set hired killers on people that post too much. Wink

The second change is a much more significant one - I plan to use Beehive forum technology, instead of the current Invision software, because Beehive has a huge number of benefits over Invision.
Here are a few of them:
  • Remembers exactly what you have and haven't read (unlike Invision, which marks everything as read when you logout)
[li]Allows replies to be sent to a specific post, or the entire thread, with notification of posts addressed to you.
[li]Flexible relationship system, including the ability to ignore signatures from individual users (particularly those with animal obsessions Tongue)
[li]Powerful and secure HTML posting that is just as easy as forumcode, but provides far more control.
[li]An excellent poll system which quite simply puts all other forum voting systems to shame.
[li]A per-user word filter system, so you can remove unpleasant words, or give people your own nicknames.
[li]An optional spell checker, to help prevent typing and spelling mistakes.
And there's a lot more advantages that you'll be able to discover for yourself once it's up and running.
One more significant thing which I'll mention now is the fact that it is Open Source and better structured than Invision, meaning modifications are much easier to do, so if you manage to find a feature it lacks, adding it should be a doddle. Smiley

So, hopefully everyone is now very excited, and possibly wondering what will happen to this place - nothing will happen; not before I have the other place is ready, and I'll post once a date is set for the actual switch. After the switch, this place will remain, although I will probably make it read-only and stick a big "go here" link pointing to the new place at the top of every page.

In the mean time, feel free to continue to post as normal, and if you have any comments or questions then obviously go ahead and ask them.

Well, the main question has to be, will it be pretty?

Damn, I'll need a new job.  Anyone want to buy a second-hand MP5?

Beehive does have several advantages I'll agree, but not many people are familiar with it.  One learning curve for the masses, coming up.

I think it is. But if anyone disagrees (or has a bee phobia) then there are nine alternative themes, along with the ability to create more.

I miss the even more ancient orange one. I think the only other person from that era that's still here is Rug.

Definitely. I've been pondering whether to attempt to create an automated tool to do it, but if that's not feesible then I can definitely manually transfer some.

Aye, fortunately there are a few good introductory guides available, which should help make the curve smoother.

If by 'year', you mean 'week', then yes. Tongue

beehive has three things that piss me off immensely:

1) ugly
2) it uses frames
3) its slow(er)

1) No it's not.
2) Why does that piss you off?
3) Depends on the server (unless you've done a test to prove it?)

1) yes it is
2) because
i) it makes the thing ugly
ii) it dosen't load properly on some browsers
iii) it dosen't load at the same rate because the thing is slow
iv) it ends up cutting things in two and making navigation cluttered
3) i'm getting slow loading speeds on servers that're pinging in fine. Plus they're consistently slow, all the ones that use beehive...not just one or two. Also a of mine from CSS claims he switched from Beehive and witnessed something of a difference, although a small one to be fair.

I say we get a wiki. Theres not that many of us...we all know eachother...lets get a wiki.

although...knowing the amount of self restraint present here...how long till it gets flooded with AV and Furries?

Same question here!  Cheesy

And SS, given this resistance to the bumblebee forum thing, I wouldn't be surprised if it took several months to make the change.  Tongue
