Browser Based Gameshttp://www.shadowmere.co.uk/Build an empire, expand and kill. Its a very deep game which may put some people off, but some may flourish in the open-ended atmosphere, there is no one way to approach the game. Unfortunately its a very single-player game, you may form clans but its nigh-on impossible to form them with predefined people.
http://games2.swirve.com/utopia/Empire building game, theres no quite as much variation as Shadowmere in tackling the game, but it also means its not as complexed either. Its been around since forever so the game is already highly developed and balanced, also hosted on godlike servers. Its a team-based game but you are placed into your clans randomly, so you may end up with terrible team mates.
http://games.swirve.com/earth/Think empire building, think attacking foreign lands...think nukes. Empire building in the modern era, gameplay is fairly linear...though i've seen some novel stabs it rarely works out decently. Its a good fun game, and probably the closest to KOC listed here...though like utopia its far more advanced. Clan based play is possible and encouraged.
http://ambar.darklights.com/site/Utopia, but a lot less confusing. Thats not to say its a simplistic copy, as some areas of the game are more developed than Utopia. Though it is less established I find the gameplay more satisfying. Heavily team orientated, and unlike Utopia you may form your own region.
http://www.nationstates.net/not really like any of the above, you create your own nation with policies. No invasions, no fighting, not even any raw numbers to go by. Every day you get a maximum of 2 issues which you have to deal with in order to develop your nation and government. There are boards open for roleplayers.
http://www.runescape.com/a browser based, RPG game. The graphics leave a lot to be desired, but the gameplay is very addictive. There is a big update planned on Dec 1st which will give the game a complete overhaul. It will in fact be called Runescape 2 by that time. I suggest waiting for the update before you start the game.
http://www.summerbreakgame.com/"SummerBreakGame is the challenge to become the best of the best. Cruisin down Minionville poppin' caps in peoples asses to picking up your cellphone to make a bootycall. Getting jobs to make cash and getting ass to showing off the badass car you own. Run with your posse and the best of the gang and most of all watch your ass because you never know when you'll get stuck from behind.......Literally"
erm...yeah @_@
Free MMORPGshttp://www.project-entropia.com/decent online Sci-Fi MMORPG which uses the same rendering engine as Morrowind or Dark Age of Camelot. This gives it some sweet visuals. Can't say i've actually played it that much basicly because my PC can't handle it well enough for my tastes.
http://www.tibia.com/Tibia is a top-down 2D MMORPG. Although the graphics don't seem to excell, the game seems to be particularily addictive, as it's servers are always full with over 10000 people playing at a time.
http://www.nexemis.com/deloria/seems like a popular game...can't say i've played though...
"Deloria Online is a graphical 2D MMORPG/MPOG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game/multiplayer online game) based in a time when warriors sought out triumph and wizards kept balance across the lands. Deloria Online is still in its alpha stages of development, meaning it is constantly being modified and upgraded as players test current features in the game."

Open Betatheres way too many to name here so i'll just put down my favorite one...
http://www.pristontale.comclassic MMORPG, slightly diablo-esq gameplay in terms of mechanics...however, the atmopshere and general appeal of it is nothing like Diablo. Anime inspired...
http://www.conqueronline.com/Experience the ancient Chinese Kungfu and magic, enjoy the endless beautiful scenery and mythical environment in which you can develop your own character and interact with other real-life and imaginary beings
http://www.muonline.com/MUonline a new one on the block so its open beta status will be there for quite a while...Amazing graphics, seemingly good concept. But i've heard a lot of complaints from various people as to the mechanics and excecution. But that dosen't stop a lot of people from loving this game...
http://www.lineage2.comwell ok...the western betas aren't up yet. Actually i'm not sure if its even going to be an open beta. In any case this is one amazing MMORPG...definately one of the most anticipated out there. The original lineage game has FIVE MILLION subscribers...that sure beats the hell outta any western RPG...just look at it...and weep
Random links:http://www.onrpg.comit might not be the most in-depth but for someone who dosen't have a lot of time, it gives a quick and good idea as to what most people out there are playing.
http://www.lomcn.co.uk/Ever thought about patching a MMORPG so that it runs on a privately owned, free server? These guys have.
