Erm, the difference being? Nerds are boring, asocial people (they don't have friends - they have fellow nerds), and are completely obsessed with things (usually computers, star trek, etc) to the point of not liking much else. No-one wants to be a nerd. Geeks are odd people, they are also obsessed about things, but it's more likely to be social things (ie: roleplaying, chatting, music, etc) which they do with their small group of friends. Some people strive for geekiness. There's also Dweebs, which are like Geeks but without friends. A Nerd who wants to end their nerdiness and get friends might go through a period of dweebishness as they try overly hard to fit in, and are perceived as a loser. Oh, and there's also Anoraks - basically, people with the complete obsession of a Nerd, but they are not as unsocial - infact they might even like to show off their knowledge on a particular topic. (Commonly trains, birds, etc.) They're still boring, except to others of their kind, who they might try to compete with.

Well computer nerds and computer geeks would have overlapping interests, and thus interact with each other, but I wouldn't call it "fusing"; that sounds too knitted.
