The closest thing to and RTS that I’ve played, well, wasn’t an RTS… (Heroes of Might and Magic and Civilization 2)
What sort of RTS game is good for learning how to play?
Cuz, I was thinking of doing some of that this spring break Smiley

If you want to go full-into the genre, then I recommend either Command and Conquer: Generals, or Rise of Nations, either the expansion or the original.  Either one is superb, but I prefer Rise of Nations, since nothing is quite as satisfying as brutally obliterating an entire horde of sword-wielding barbarians with two tanks and 5 assault infantry.  (Of course, nothing sucks more than telling your friend 'I'm going to rape you with my huge army in the center of the map' and then watching in horror as he nukes them with a nuke you thought you destroyed)

I would also like to add Age of Empires, both the original and Age of Kings:

http://www.microsoft.com/games/age2/downloads.htm
Which are similar to RoN, but in specific eras.

And you can't get it yet, but I might as well mention the third in the AoE series which looks brilliantly beautiful:

Oh oh, I forgot, I’ve played their Age of Mythology.  I guess that means I have played a RTS…
I think I have an AOE2 demo here on CD someplace...

I’m fucking fed up with my computers.  All of which have crap monitors; for instance, my Samsung monitor went all fuzzy in a year so I sent it back for them to fix it, so I’m stuck with this 15/14in I have for a backup that can’t do any better then 60Hz when higher then 800x600
My game computer (aside from being a win 98 and crashing all the time) the monitor would only say that there was no signal and the usual fix of giggling the plug didn’t work.
I’m so going to have to spend some money on these things, the format the buggers too.

I was going to spend my birthday learning how to play RTSs too… <_<

I wonder if this computer could take these games?...
WinXP, 1.3GHz, 512 Meg of DDR RAM (133Hz FSB), Nvidia Geforce2 MX 400

I've run AoEII:Age of Kings on a P200... didn't have Internet shite on it at the time, but surely they can't eat up that much?

Same machine had a Samsung monitor, which was dark and crap.
If you're getting a new monitor I'd recommend Hansol, which are bright and nice. Smiley

Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne

no competition...just so smooth...so dynamic

going back to generals after playing Frozen Throne is like using double velvet toilet paper...then reverting back to sandpaper

And if you play Warcraft III, you need to play WoW too.  Tongue
