Ok, downloaded the zip, unzipped it, I followed the instructions and uploaded the files.
I made sure MySQL access is enabled with the server, so that's not a problem.
I did CHMOD to allow access to the folders archive_in, archive_out and uploads, and also did CHMOD conf_global.php to 0666 (the path is public_html/forums/conf_global.php , i thought?).

Ok, Step 1 of the installation complete.

So far so good. I run the sm_install.php. The kicker?
    * Cannot write to 'conf_global.php'. Please adjust the permissions to allow this script to write to the file. if in doubt, CHMOD via FTP to 0777

Ok, no biggie, it's also mentioned in the install instructions.  So I do it (through telnet to the server, there shouldn't be any difference).

I rerun sm_install.php.
    * Cannot write to 'conf_global.php'. Please adjust the permissions to allow this script to write to the file. if in doubt, CHMOD via FTP to 0777

I say, WTF?!
Subsequent attempts and still no go.
Btw, I'm uploading files through IE explorer/FTP browser, and running the sm_install.php with Mozilla Firebird.

Think anyone can help me?

Edit:
Further details -
I know for sure CHMOD is accessing the right directory and right file because it doesn't return with a "chmod: WARNING: can't access ..." message.
What I don't know for sure is if the file mode change is actually done right and if its the right mode, because it returns no message after inputting one (with a correct directory/filepath).

Ok, update:
I checked the mode on conf_global.php.  It already is set to 777.
Ok, I run sm_install.php again.

I still get the same error message.
Why?!

From what I know, 777 allows anyone and anything to change the file.  So what's preventing them?!

...
Is it because the thing's in a college server?  But I thought CHMOD takes care of that...

I think CHMOD only works on unix hosts. If it's a Windows-based server you'll need to do ... something different, I forget what.

And do it with IE and via FTP also.

Board Settings>User Profiles
Sixth option down: "Maximum signature image dimensions"

I have a vague feeling that I installed a mod for it though.

You can't change number of images, but you can set the maximum length (in bytes) ... not sure if/how well that bit works though.

"Sun Microsystems" ...sounds like Solaris. I managed to crash that once. Cheesy
