Title: iPod Alternatives...
Post by: Hornet on October 05, 2005, 07:41:29 PM

The title says it all, really.  I do a lot of walking (about 30 miles a week), and have come to the conclusion that a portable music player might be a worthwhile investment.  But the iPod is far too expensive and overhyped, and I'd rather not join The Cult of the White Cord if I can help it.

I've skimmed over the other options, namely Walkmans, CD players (and miniCD players), MiniDiscs, and MP3 players, but they all seem to have their pros and cons, and as each site is trying to sell their respective goods I can't get an unbiased opinion from them. Thus, I put the question to the masses.

I faced the same dilema you are right now. The solution is easy.

Zen Touch! It is made by Creative, which is also experienced in computer sound cards. They may seem a little big and heavy, but they are not easily busted, and have a battery life of 24 hours. I read a story of some guy who kicked this player off of his bike, made it fly through the air, and crashed into the asphault. It left a "scar" on the corner of the player, but worked perfectly fine.

If you prefer small, but still high quality and durable, then check out the other Zen's. You can find them at the following link:

http://www.creative.com/products/mp3/ (http://www.creative.com/products/mp3/)

I bought mine off of Buy.com for $200, which is about $50 less then any other site I saw.

I hope this helped you.

in other news, Apple recently released the iPod Figment, an iPod so small it can't be seen with the naked eye and may not actually exist.

got that from the Borowitz Report, hilarious.

On a more serious note, whenever I hold a Nano, i feel like crushing it with my fist... It's that small...

I haven't seen one yet.  I went to the store and saw a pile of boxes...but they don't have the same little window that lets you see what's inside... for some reason... I didn't want to touch it in order to further investigate...

They do look like you can snap them in half, but apparantly they're incredibly tough.

how is the freedom of moving what you want on and off of them?  or do you have to use other software/hack a little to get what you want?

Talking of other software... (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPod_Linux)

Thanks for your input, sundry and all, most useful.  Currently considering a mini-CD player, the only downside appearing to be the battery-munching.

MP3's are going to take over, because they are superior. I just think the MD players are a pain..but hey, i suppose if you get one of those remote deals it would be alright..

It's all about personal preferance. I don't know what you do during your day, which is a pretty big factor.

The only thing MP3s are superior to is 22KHz WAVs.

...in your being able to sleep at night

we had a discussion about that in physics today, apparently its just and upgrade to the nano but as our teacher point out who the hell would want to watch videos on a 1inch screen?!?!?

This is what I have (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001IXUGC/104-2133185-8091145?v=glance&n=172282&n=507846&s=electronics&v=glance)

It's big,  but it covers everything I need (and can withstand some pretty good drops :P). Plus CD-Rs are dirt cheap.

You say big, I say durable.

I love the Zen, I can drop it all I want without worry, I can stick it in my pocket and mow the lawn or go for a bike ride without worry, and the sound quality is great. The scroll pad is not as sensitive and some people say, you just have to get used to it. Also, it doesn't hijack your computer like the iPod. iTunes, iMail, i Wanna kill myself... (HAHA Tom...)
