Title: Hobbies Post by: Hornet on September 06, 2006, 04:44:16 PM A topic for discussion of hobbies. Everyone ought to have one, so what's yours? Or are you thinking of taking up a new one, and if so, what? I have a few different ones, and I tend to flit between them frequently. Currently, I'm making a variety of rat toys, earrings (surprisingly fun, and very fiddly), and even small amounts of chainmail (which is very intensive work). I'm also thinking of making more minature siege engines soon, along with model weapons, as I've recently aquired some new tools that'll help considerably. As a long term ambition - as soon as I can find a decent piece of wood - I'm hoping to make a recurve bow, although that's not really a hobby as such, as once it's been shaped it needs to be left for a few months. But that'll be a lot of fun when 'tis made. I probably ought to take some photos, actually ... and I also need to make a website to put them on (I've been meaning to make myself a site for ages). It'd be interesting to hear other's thoughts on them. Title: Hobbies Post by: SS on September 06, 2006, 05:51:36 PM You should post pictures - medieval weaponry is fun. :D
My current main hobby (aside from the computery stuff) is photography. I'll post some of my recent photos either tomorrow or friday. I'm also thinking of starting Tai Chi... not sure on that yet though. Title: Hobbies Post by: Hornet on September 06, 2006, 06:21:18 PM Indeed, although I'm not sure when I'll make them, as I haven't got any square dowelling here yet. I'm planning to go into town tomorrow though, so I might be able to get some then. I do a fair bit of that, too - I took some photos of a very strange flower a few days ago. I've absolutely no idea what it is. I'll have to upload it and see if anyone knows. I have a friend who does Tai Chi. Apparently it can be sped up and used in self defence. Either that or they'll be too busy laughing to try to attack you. Title: Hobbies Post by: matt_the_shark on September 06, 2006, 10:13:11 PM For the past six years, it's been swimming. Until yesterday, I planned on doing it in college. Yesterday, I was terribly disappointed. I'm considering trying crew now.
Title: Hobbies Post by: Hornet on September 06, 2006, 11:56:23 PM This would beg the question of what happened yesterday...? It must have been something rather dire. :miffed: Title: Hobbies Post by: Galmort on September 07, 2006, 04:02:06 AM wow sharky, i'm sorry man.
I play frisbee. :hmmm: otherwise, i love photography, but don't have enough confidence to whip out my camera all the time :P i'm in school soccer but its kind of gay, i don't feel like explaining cause i complain too much i love driving as well and listening to music, but who doesn't, right? i wish i had some unique hobby like...spelunking or something. something crazy you know. but meh I've always wanted to try skydiving or something...fairly certain i'd never have the balls to do it though :P and lastly, i do enjoy reading. although, i haven't done much of it of late <_< i also like to ramble on ^^ as said by led zeppelin Title: Hobbies Post by: RipperRoo on September 07, 2006, 12:07:54 PM My hobby is music.
Learning the piano, play the guitar and drums. Also enjoy listening to it. :) I also like playing badminton, but haven't played it for ages, should get back into it I spose. Nothing remotely exciting though... Title: Hobbies Post by: mole on September 07, 2006, 01:04:51 PM sadly most of my hobbies have dropped for the summer, i rarely get to go rock climbing anymore which is sad, but to be fair most of the times i plan to go i end up hung over or working early to go to a party.
still play my bass which is always fun. motorbikes is another though mine is still at the garage. and next month i plan on taking up rowing to keep me fit during uni Title: Hobbies Post by: Hornet on September 07, 2006, 02:36:38 PM Quote My hobby is music. I also play the piano (well, keyboard), although I seem to have some kind of biological aversion to reading music, so I end up memorising the tunes and playing them from memory. 'Tis useful in that if I encounter a piano on my travels, I can immediately set up shop, but it's annoying when you get to the end of a tune, and find that you can't quite remember how the thing ends. On a related note, I obtained a load of Final Fantasy VII music the other day, so it'll be interesting to see how I get on with that.Learning the piano, play the guitar and drums. Also enjoy listening to it. :) I also like playing badminton, but haven't played it for ages, should get back into it I spose. Nothing remotely exciting though... Quote still play my bass which is always fun. When I first read that, I thought you meant as in the fish. Title: Hobbies Post by: Louise on September 07, 2006, 08:57:06 PM Wheee, fish! :D I used to have a tank with a few fish in it. They were fun - you could watch them swimming round, and round, and round... (it's even fun when you're sober.)
I'd love to take up spelunking, just because it has such a cool name. The actual activity sounds good as well. And it'd look great on university applications for both reasons. As for what I do do: I used to cross stitch, although it takes more patience than I usually have, so I haven't done it for a while. I sporadically write, have been published a couple of times, but don't put enough work into it to make any progress or get anything else sent out. I also sometimes contribute critiques to writing websites. I spend a good deal of time on the internet and playing computer games. Also walk and swim to some degree. Oh, and reading. I read stuff a lot. I even read the backs of packets when left with them for too many seconds. <_< Cross stitch Piglet in a barrel. :) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v197/octarinelouise/cross_stitch_piglet.jpg) Title: Hobbies Post by: SS on September 07, 2006, 09:12:40 PM Quote I have a friend who does Tai Chi. Apparently it can be sped up and used in self defence. Well not really. From what I understand of it, the point of Tai Chi is simply a set of movements that help to control and improve the flow of various things (breathing, blood, energy, mana, etc).Wikipedia has a lot more elaborate description... mentions a bit on the martial aspects, but it doesn't appear to be a case of just speeding it up. Quote Either that or they'll be too busy laughing to try to attack you. I don't need to wave my arms about to make people laugh at me! :P   Title: Hobbies Post by: ns33 on September 08, 2006, 12:55:26 AM I haven't played piano or violin for quite a while, thanks to the collegiate system of music instruction and level or work to do. :hmmm: Currently, my hobbies include:
Going to class Sleeping Eating Going to class Reading Going to class I lead an exciting life :alien: Title: Hobbies Post by: mole on September 08, 2006, 01:04:36 AM looks like a good cross-stitch but my attention was quickly distracted by the reflection, theres a lot more to see
Title: Hobbies Post by: Hornet on September 08, 2006, 01:55:25 AM Is anyone else reminded of that eBay kettle? LOL Title: Hobbies Post by: Galmort on September 08, 2006, 02:41:04 AM violin would be so sweet to play. maybe not as sweet as it sounds though, i don't know
i also think it would be awesome to play the accordian :D Title: Hobbies Post by: mole on September 09, 2006, 12:31:08 AM is that the pirate instrument?
Title: Hobbies Post by: Louise on September 10, 2006, 12:26:35 AM Quote Is anyone else reminded of that eBay kettle? LOL What with that and the G-spot comment, does anyone else think his mind is slightly in the gutter lately? <_<And mole, I thought pirates played the harmonica? Or is that only inmates... Title: Hobbies Post by: mole on September 10, 2006, 12:41:02 AM your thinking of queer pirates
Title: Hobbies Post by: Lord Lanair on September 11, 2006, 05:18:18 AM Quote i also think it would be awesome to play the accordian :D Totally seconded. After I finally try to learn how to play organ, that'll be my next project. :DIsn't the accordian played by all those street musicians? :P Title: Hobbies Post by: Hornet on September 13, 2006, 08:58:32 AM That and the guitar seem to be rather popular. Although I haven't seen many accordians around lately... but then I don't really encounter that many street performers. Louise, are you going to post a link to any of your stories...? That published one is still online (I won't mention the title, as it's highly unique). Title: Hobbies Post by: Galmort on September 16, 2006, 06:13:44 AM banjo anyone?
Title: Hobbies Post by: mole on September 16, 2006, 09:57:52 PM the clown?

very cool ns ^_^ Title: Hobbies Post by: mole on September 21, 2006, 09:50:51 PM tornado? built one years and years ago and me and my dad painted it in desert storm colours
Title: Hobbies Post by: SS on September 21, 2006, 10:24:31 PM  Where the feck did you get Tornado from? That's an F-16?
Title: Hobbies Post by: mole on September 22, 2006, 02:43:53 AM *goes back* hmmm looks very much like a model i used to have,
Title: Hobbies Post by: SS on September 22, 2006, 01:27:59 PM Heh, well your model is probably an F-16 then. :P
Tornadoes are swing-wing -- their wings can be swept back against their body for fast flight, or stretched out almost in a + shape for maneuverability and take-off/landing. As you can see, the model above has fixed triangular wings, and also quite a distinctive shape. Title: Hobbies Post by: mole on September 22, 2006, 01:32:51 PM oh yea *nostalgic moment* it was a tornado model then :P
Title: Hobbies Post by: smi256 on September 22, 2006, 07:20:45 PM oh no way, I had a tornado model too. It was so awesome :)
Title: Hobbies Post by: mole on September 22, 2006, 08:22:12 PM wings sweped and everything. Looked great with the big extra tank and full armourment on the underside too
Title: Hobbies Post by: SS on September 24, 2006, 03:01:12 PM Armament.
And swept - I even already wrote that one above. :P Title: Hobbies Post by: mole on September 26, 2006, 04:40:35 PM shes gotten to you too huh? <_<
Title: Hobbies Post by: Louise on September 26, 2006, 06:12:53 PM I will now rub my hands together and cackle gleefully.
:) Title: Hobbies Post by: SS on September 27, 2006, 12:59:15 AM Quote shes gotten to you too huh? Oi! I object to the implication that my natural pedantry skills come from an outside influence! Title: Hobbies Post by: mole on September 27, 2006, 09:06:02 AM objection duely ignored
Title: Hobbies Post by: SS on September 28, 2006, 08:51:22 PM *seethes with a burning fury*
:asha'man/2: IT'S DULY!!! :asha'man/2: :paranoid: *hums* Title: Hobbies Post by: mole on September 28, 2006, 10:51:06 PM makes me want to purposely spell things wrong
Title: Hobbies Post by: SS on September 28, 2006, 10:57:26 PM *contemplates getting a mandatory spell checker mod... just for moles posts*
Title: Hobbies Post by: mole on September 29, 2006, 12:41:27 AM yea do, well see how long it takes me to find combinations that mess it up, and lets face it with my typing not long
Title: Hobbies Post by: Hornet on October 01, 2006, 10:07:34 PM Back on topic, I've just finished a silver-plated chainmail handflower, which I'll have to post a picture of as soon as I can get my hands on both the camera and my girlfriend... Edit: Said (http://danda.org.uk/Spawn/Slice/Silver.jpg) photos (http://danda.org.uk/Spawn/Slice/GoldClose.jpg), as (http://danda.org.uk/Spawn/Slice/Hand.jpg) promised. (http://danda.org.uk/Spawn/Slice/Detail.jpg) The lighting's terrible, hence why it either looks golden or as if it's under a floodlight. It's not completely finished, as I ran out of wire, and want to make the bracelet part of it a few links thicker. I might also change the direction of the weave so that it matchs the main part, as that that'll probably look better, and also make doing it up a bit easier. Still - any thoughts as it currently stands? Title: Hobbies Post by: smi256 on October 02, 2006, 05:35:47 PM That's really cool Hornet. I think it would be fun to spend time making something like that.
It would be fun to have some time.. Period... :miffed: Title: Hobbies Post by: mole on October 03, 2006, 09:50:02 AM wow, a rather different way to spend your free time
Title: Hobbies Post by: Hornet on October 03, 2006, 06:47:36 PM Indeed, 'tis much fun. :) My next project is going to consist of making a hauberk (http://www.medievalrepro.com/Images/hauberk.gif) and a coif (http://www.medievalrepro.com/Images/mailcoif.JPG), for a teddybear of all things. Title: Hobbies Post by: mole on October 04, 2006, 12:39:49 AM some kind of fetish?
Title: Hobbies Post by: Hornet on October 04, 2006, 06:02:18 PM Not really, although there are certain other teddy bears that I could mention... isn't that right, Louise? Title: Hobbies Post by: smi256 on October 05, 2006, 05:30:30 AM I'd say that the teddy bear would be much easier just because of the smaller size.
umm.. are you saying that you made something for Louise... and you are now calling her a teddy bear? I'm thinking that your GF needs to get involved here somehow. :miffed: Title: Hobbies Post by: Hornet on October 05, 2006, 07:23:13 AM Hah! No, not called her that yet. :P Louise just happens to own a few 'exotic' teddy bears. And yes, teddy bear-sized mail is indeed _far_ easier to make than the human-sized counterpart. Which is a pity, as you can sell human chainmail for a small fortune. :( Title: Hobbies Post by: underruler on October 05, 2006, 09:36:41 AM I can't remember if I ever responded to this...
so far... I've lost all my hobbies and taken up being a fat college student. is being naked a hobby because I really miss that the most. I never get to walk around in my underwear which sucks... and I can't cook anything without walking block to the freaking kitchen... If we just had a microwave. I miss cooking... that was my favorite hobby... now I guess.... my hobby is eating. Wow... hobby sounds like a weird word after you've used it a bazillion times. yep.. it's kind of late at night and I should go to sleep if I'm going to go eat breakfast foooolzzz! nyaaaah. Title: Hobbies Post by: Louise on October 05, 2006, 01:09:12 PM Heh, teddy bears.
Nice chain mail, Hornet. And yes, college can indeed kill your hobbies. Your free time gets overtaken by this thing called 'homework'. Although, at least as I'm living at home I can still cook, and put garlic and ginger and other strange ingredients into things. :) Title: Hobbies Post by: mole on October 05, 2006, 07:02:02 PM bums! and not the beach kind. weve become bums by going to uni, we dont do much, we use the car to get everywhere and we surf...weve become surfer bums...its fantastic!
Title: Hobbies Post by: underruler on October 05, 2006, 07:04:55 PM I'm in Davis... and all I do is bike... and study... and watch TV.
At least now I can watch the price is right. whee! Title: Hobbies Post by: mole on October 05, 2006, 07:41:08 PM hmmm i do go to the gym, part of the rowing club and climb aswell so i do get my share of exercise
Title: Hobbies Post by: Lord Lanair on October 06, 2006, 06:29:46 AM Exercise? What is this strange concept? Unless you count carrying a sousaphone around, I hate exercise. :P
Title: Hobbies Post by: smi256 on October 06, 2006, 07:42:42 AM I've been talking the forest trails to get around the campus, but when I'm back at the Inn, I'm playing with linux or just talking to people :-D
Title: Hobbies Post by: matt_the_shark on October 06, 2006, 05:06:58 PM I'm on the crew team here (that's what we sometimes call rowing here in the us), that's been good, the morning practices suck though. that's the only thing keeping me from gaining weight, I swear. Other than that I'd say eating, sleeping, classes, and talking with my girlfriend back in syracuse. Yep, I'd say that's it :)
