Title: Armed Forces Post by: RipperRoo on July 07, 2005, 09:13:48 PM Does anyone know anyone in the armed forces?
Was wondering as I was thinking about becoming a hellicopter pilot for either the Army/RAF/Navy, and was wondering if army life is as bad as its made to be on crappy Hollywood films. Anyway, I was reading up on piloting, and I pass all the requirements, except, it says that you aren't allowed to have had surgery on your eyes, now, I haven't, but I also have slightly less than perfect vision, I need to wear glasses to read the board/signs a bit away. I always thought that you had to have perfect vision to be a pilot, so if you aren't allowed to have had surgery, does laser eye count? That is supposed to perfect your eyesight without any side-effects. Just wondering if anyone knew, cheers. Title: Armed Forces Post by: SS on July 08, 2005, 10:25:14 AM My cousin is/was in the RAF. Can't remember if he still is or not, but he used to fly Hawks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawker-Siddeley_Hawk) and Tornados (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panavia_Tornado).
Haven't seen him in ages, but I think I've got his e-mail address lying around somewhere, so I can forward your questions on if you want? Title: Armed Forces Post by: RipperRoo on July 08, 2005, 03:43:42 PM Please, if you could.
Title: Armed Forces Post by: RipperRoo on July 11, 2005, 10:12:24 PM Woo, double post.
Apparently laser eye doesn't count as surgery, so thats one way, I still need to find out the worst vision acceptable though. Title: Armed Forces Post by: Rug on July 11, 2005, 11:34:42 PM I would assume to be a pilot you need 20/20 vision. =).

Title: Armed Forces Post by: RipperRoo on July 14, 2005, 03:29:55 PM Theres a difference between not being able to read writing on a board 25 foot away and not being able to tell the difference between a roof and a landing pad...
