Title: My new computer Post by: SS on February 04, 2005, 07:58:00 PM I'm bored, but have to wait for NWN 1.65 patch to download, so I'm going to post about my new computer. :)
It's an Athlon 64 Newcastle 2800+, 1GB of PC3200 RAM, and a nice black case with a quiet PSU and a temperature-regulated fan. It's got a nice fast 200GB SATA hard-drive. Oh and 7.1 sound on the motherboard! :D I've only got four speakers at the moment though, so I'll have to get some extra ones eventually. And a new DVD drive, because my current one is crappy. And my download is flashing orange... and it's done. I'm going home now. If anyone really cares about my computer, I'll post more on Monday. Title: My new computer Post by: Lord Lanair on February 05, 2005, 08:32:39 AM All I can say is- it's not a mac. Therefore, it must be inferior. :P
Title: My new computer Post by: FragMaster1972 on February 06, 2005, 03:21:58 AM pfft. macs suck. hard.
Title: My new computer Post by: Lord Lanair on February 07, 2005, 04:54:48 AM What do you know? :P LOL
Title: My new computer Post by: FragMaster1972 on February 07, 2005, 06:32:10 AM a lot more than you.

Title: My new computer Post by: Lord Lanair on February 11, 2005, 05:20:26 AM Me or my computer? :P
*prepares whip/power cord for an insulting response* :D Title: My new computer Post by: smi256 on March 03, 2005, 05:00:16 AM I would have thought that you would use a PCI sound card rather then using system resources.
But ya, what are some of the other specs of your new compy? Title: My new computer Post by: SS on March 03, 2005, 08:05:52 PM Meh, got plenty of system resources, and the only PCI card I've got is an 4.1 one.
Um, other specs... It's got USB2, IEEE1394, an old TEAC CD-R/W drive and a broken Samsung DVD-ROM... definitely going to have to get a new one now, probably a lovely fast NEC CD/DVD±R/W combo. Uh, 19" Hansol monitor. Logitech MX700 mouse. Cambridge SoundWorks speakers. Anything you want to know in particular? Title: My new computer Post by: smi256 on March 05, 2005, 03:45:10 AM isn't it cheaper to get a dvd-burner, rather then a combo drive? actualy.. isn't it cheaper to buy a dvd-burner and a cd-burner then one combo drive? meh, I'm just cheap.
about dvd burners, are there any programs that actualy use dual-layer? because I saw a $100 dual-layer burner in the fry's ads, cuz, I might be in the market. heh, maybe I should findout if I could even use such a feature... :P Title: My new computer Post by: SS on March 07, 2005, 07:42:09 PM I'm not sure if you can buy DVD burners that don't also do CD burning? :/
As for dual-layer apps... no idea. I'm more interested in just being able to read any disc I happen to get. Title: My new computer Post by: matt_the_shark on March 08, 2005, 05:57:07 AM can't say that I've ever seen one :/
Title: My new computer Post by: smi256 on March 12, 2005, 07:36:52 PM I had just downloaded a TV show I used to watch Gargoyles (it went to cable, which I don’t have) and for me to burn it to CDs, it took 30, where as with DVDs, it would have taken only 3… <_<
As it is, I might need a new CD ROM, but if I can, I'd like to get something better, namely a DVD burner. :D Title: My new computer Post by: smi256 on March 17, 2005, 11:00:48 PM I’ve looked into DVD burners. Double layer is exactly that, instead of the normal 4.7 GB, you can have up to 7.96 GB. The only problem is: finding Dual layer DVDs, paying possibly five times more then normal, and being stuck at about 2.4x write speed.
Other facts are that DVD burners may very well be stuck with a maximum write speed of 16x, and to even write that fast your burner has to have support (updated firmware) for that model code (the manufacturer may not actually make the DVDs, so not all DVDs from a particular vender may work with your DVD. This should be fixed with time) Also, DVD-R is less versatile then DVD+R (should work with TV DVD players). When a burner is advertised as “multi-format” it just means that it will write both DVD-R and DVD+R. Site: Tom's Hardware - Double-Layer DVD (http://www20.tomshardware.com/storage/20040707/dvd_recording-01.html) Some more recent comparison: Tom's Hardware - 10 DVD Burners: 16x and Dual-Layer - or Nothing! (http://www.tomshardware.com/storage/20041102/index.html) I like that site :) Title: My new computer Post by: smi256 on May 15, 2005, 01:43:04 AM /me pokes computer thread ;)
/me pokes his GeForce 400  What video cards have you guys been happy with? and would I be able to pay that much for them? I was looking at a ATI 9600XT (128 MB) for about $120 I didn't get it because when I went to the store, they had sold out or I couldn't find it... more likily that it wasn't maked correctly <_< /me wants 9800 PRO :) Title: My new computer Post by: Arkanor on May 16, 2005, 06:11:22 AM Don't laugh. DON'T LAUGH.
Intel Integrated Graphics. LOL :D :P :) ;) :hmmm: <_< :miffed: :( :o  Title: My new computer Post by: SS on May 16, 2005, 05:45:00 PM I've still got my GeForce FX5200, which was relatively cheap and is a good enough card for most games.
Still haven't got round to getting myself a new DVD drive though. :/ Title: My new computer Post by: diskreet on May 18, 2005, 12:10:30 AM i have a GeForce FX 5700LE (256MB).
it's nice. you can probably get one for cheap too. i never buy the cutting edge new ones.. they're way overpriced. i do think you get more for your money with nVidia cards though. Title: My new computer Post by: smi256 on May 18, 2005, 09:40:08 PM ya, all my video cards are nVidia right now
all same make just about 400 420 440 |
