Title: Memory problem... Post by: Lord Lanair on October 30, 2004, 04:45:59 PM My computer seems to have a problem- whenever I look at more than 2 websites with a lot of graphics, it gives me the error message "Not enough memory to open the plug-in Shockwave Flash NP-PPC. Allocating more memory to IE may help." However, when I allocate IE more memory, a lot more, the problem persists. Is there some way to find a new Shockwave thing that allows me to view stuff on the Internet without error messages? :miffed:

Title: Memory problem... Post by: mole on October 31, 2004, 05:24:25 PM or maybe...he bought a mac *slaps forehead*
have tried buying more memory? Title: Memory problem... Post by: Lord Lanair on November 01, 2004, 05:09:40 AM Yes, it is my old mac. :P
Why buy memory? Can't I just increase the virtual memory? :miffed: Title: Memory problem... Post by: Guest:SS on November 01, 2004, 02:47:25 PM You've only got so much actual physical memory. Anything else is stored as a swap file on the hard-drive.
You can increase virtual memory as much as your hard-drive will allow, but you're not actually increasing the amount of memory you actually have, just the maximum size of the swap file. And as I said the swap file is exactly that - a file where data is swapped between memory and the hard-drive, which is a lot slower than regular memory. If you've got things like text documents then virtual memory is fine, because you'll only ever be editing one at a time, and you don't mind a short wait while the data is swapped over when you switch between them. However if you're using Flash/Shockwave stuff which is constantly going to be reading & writing, then virtual memory isn't going to be good enough, because it'll be too slow. So, you want to do what mole said and buy some more memory. :P Title: Memory problem... Post by: Lord Lanair on November 01, 2004, 11:33:20 PM I'd rather wait until I go to college and get a new laptop, but I was wondering if there was a short-term fix. :)
Title: Memory problem... Post by: Guest:SS on November 02, 2004, 09:57:34 AM Yeah - don't go to sites with lots of Flash stuff. :P
Oooh, alternatively, try forcing Flash into low quality mode on startup. Not sure how that's done, but try asking on the Macromedia forums - someone there should know. Title: Memory problem... Post by: FragMaster1972 on November 04, 2004, 03:41:08 AM macs are notorious for that. My dad had to get over 512mb (can't remember exact amount though) in his mac to keep it from running out of memory, and most of what he does is word processing.
