Title: Adventures in China Post by: Lord Lanair on August 18, 2004, 11:03:14 PM Ev went to China?
Title: Adventures in China Post by: Everous on August 19, 2004, 12:34:43 AM yeah...and I'm still in China
I've got no plans these few days so I'm just gonna surf the web a little, watch some TV and relax. I got myself shacked up in a five star hotel, they have some MAD fast broadband. Title: Adventures in China Post by: Lord Lanair on August 19, 2004, 02:38:18 AM Oooooh, where are you/where did you go on your trip???? I might have seen you and not realized it! LOL
Title: Adventures in China Post by: Everous on August 19, 2004, 03:15:05 AM I stayed in Beijing for a few days, visited the forbidden city, the summer palace, a coupla monastaries by day...and went in for a little night life :hehe:
Then I got my ass hauled to Xian, visited my cousins...slept in late and went spending big around town at night. Climbed Hua Shan and slept up there, and some other big assed mountain whos name I can't rightly spell...Stayed in a coupla times in the Grand Castle Hotel where I stayed. The five star service was cool...they had some water garden indoors with a live pianist at night, so I requested a few songs and drank a few Royal Coffees (btw: ALL the coffee in this country tastes awful). Then I got my ass hauled to this other five star hotel where I am now, the room is better, but there aren't such great facilities. not a lot to say really...I'm just here sightseeing...on the point of which, I spotted this sign outside some old WW2 guerrila tunnel network outside Beijing (http://img48.exs.cx/img48/5134/Image255.jpg) Title: Adventures in China Post by: Lord Lanair on August 19, 2004, 07:05:25 AM Heh, I visited Beijing and Xi'an 2 weeks ago, so I guess I couldn't see you. :P Although, my tour group never got any treatment like that! Was it because we looked too much like American tourists? LOL
Ev- cute picture, but I'd much rather go to a restaurant that served "Anti-Chinese food" instead. ;) Title: Adventures in China Post by: Everous on August 19, 2004, 07:59:43 AM Its not because you look american. Its because package tours are by nature cheap 'n flimsy...like a bad boob job. The nasty comments behind your back, the way drivers seem to be aiming right at you, the way people put out fag ends on your butt...THATS because you look american :P
I'm not with a tour group, I got too many people to see, things to do. Though China is a difficult place to get around if you don't know anyone, so if you're just visiting infrequently its still best to go with a package tour. I'm really starting to wish someone in this place knew how to make a coffee. anti-chinese food huh?...dunno if a place like that would last long here :alien: Title: Adventures in China Post by: Lord Lanair on August 19, 2004, 05:37:34 PM Our tour was 10 people, so it's not like we were a mob of Americans... though we always attracted a mob of peddlers and beggars! LOL
I'm sure that a non-Chinese restaurant would be good variety in China.... they seem to be lacking every type of food except the same old Chinese dishes. :P Oh, and the drivers just aim at everyone. ;) :hehe: Title: Adventures in China Post by: mole on August 19, 2004, 05:53:46 PM they need somthing to keep them occupied all day
Title: Adventures in China Post by: Lord Lanair on August 20, 2004, 04:27:36 AM Except..... not many people own cars, except in Beijing. I did see a lot of people sitting around on the streets to pass the time, though! :)
Title: Adventures in China Post by: Guest:Everous on August 20, 2004, 05:54:59 AM Lanair...thats just blatantly not true...I can find a KFC here in Xian by walking 50 meters in just about any direction...theres over 40 of them in Beijing...and about as many McDonalds. Though I don't suppose you went around visiting the fast food chains with your tour group.
As for cars...the roads are jam packed right now. Most are taxis or what I assume to be company cars...even the four lane roads are full. Title: Adventures in China Post by: Lord Lanair on August 20, 2004, 07:21:12 AM Quote Lanair...thats just blatantly not true...I can find a KFC here in Xian by walking 50 meters in just about any direction...theres over 40 of them in Beijing...and about as many McDonalds. That is, if you consider those places food. ;) A few of us actually wanted to stop at a McDonald's for dinner once (we were desparate for any American meal), but instead we got driven to another hotel. LOL Title: Adventures in China Post by: mole on August 20, 2004, 01:54:33 PM *decides to point out hamburgers arent american*
Title: Adventures in China Post by: Everous on August 20, 2004, 02:31:34 PM I think they are actually...an american saw a stall selling pieces of meat in between two slices of bread at a world convention in crystal palace. He took the idea and modified it, adding the meat in some sesame buns, creating the burger as we know it.
At least, thats what I heard. Title: Adventures in China Post by: Rug on August 20, 2004, 05:27:53 PM Split into a topic of its own. Still in HQ as it isn't spam, however. Enjoy!
Title: Adventures in China Post by: mole on August 20, 2004, 05:28:59 PM its was some european guy that decided to make mince then cook it like now except they were a lot fatter and squat
Title: Adventures in China Post by: Lord Lanair on August 20, 2004, 07:18:44 PM Quote Split into a topic of its own. Still in HQ as it isn't spam, however. Enjoy! I was waiting for that! LOL Ev- since you're in Xi'an, have you seen the terra cotta soldiers yet? :) Title: Adventures in China Post by: mole on August 20, 2004, 08:03:37 PM :o is that the excavation in the mountain? i really wanna see that :miffed:
Title: Adventures in China Post by: Galmort on August 21, 2004, 02:22:57 AM that would be really cool
Title: Adventures in China Post by: Lord Lanair on August 21, 2004, 03:20:59 AM Meh, I didn't like it too much. All you could see were the 3 pits with the terra cotta soldiers in them... and the pits weren't completely excavated. A lot of the soldiers were broken, too. I wanna go back in 10 years when they finish the job. :(
Title: Adventures in China Post by: mole on August 22, 2004, 06:40:47 PM id like to go back 2200 years and see it when it was finished
Title: Adventures in China Post by: Lord Lanair on August 22, 2004, 11:56:22 PM Oooh, or go into the actual tomb, which is supposed to be amazing (but is closed to the public). Of course, if you saw the Emperor's tomb and army, you'd probably be killed to protect it's location/contents. LOL
Title: Adventures in China Post by: mole on August 23, 2004, 10:38:30 AM i think it would bea little hard to keep its location secret with all that stuff being moved there
Title: Adventures in China Post by: Lord Lanair on August 23, 2004, 03:37:48 PM Well, until 1990-something is was a secret! Everyone after the early Han Dynsaty didn't know where the tomb was, since it was camouflaged as a giant mountain. ;)
Title: Adventures in China Post by: mole on August 23, 2004, 05:13:53 PM yea but i mean at the time, someone would get suspicious over all the wagon trains
Title: Adventures in China Post by: Guest:Everous on August 25, 2004, 02:49:27 PM I've pretty much seen all there is to see around here. The terracotta warriors are kinda...um...crap. To be honest theres not much to see and say about a bunch of statues, a lot of them disfigured. Its like the great wall, you gotta go and see it...but once you get there, theres not much to be done about it.
Title: Adventures in China Post by: Lord Lanair on August 25, 2004, 07:33:43 PM Heh... I agree about the soldiers, but the wall was different. My brother and I climbed up the steeper half.... and I mean steep. In places the wall was going up at a 60 degree angle. Man, that was hard.
By the way, I have the long-awaited picture gallery here!!! Go to this site (http://www.olympus.ofoto.com/I.jsp?c=9ouitre.19460hky&x=1&y=-uhb60o) to see them. BTW- you might have to register, so just do so. :) Title: Adventures in China Post by: mole on August 25, 2004, 08:05:38 PM ah got there eventually.

...like climbing Hua Shan up cliff edges as steep as 90 degrees a wall just ain't so hot...and theres always so many people there Title: Adventures in China Post by: Perdition on August 26, 2004, 03:52:45 AM Quote Seriously? That sucks..... but the pictures are worth the wait! yeah that'll happen. :P Gimme your address and I'll air-mail you our photo album! Title: Adventures in China Post by: Everous on August 26, 2004, 04:43:47 PM dunno, but all the tour groups here are just out for money, they pack too many events in..you'll have a better time if you go by yourself with a guide or a relative or something

LOL Title: Adventures in China Post by: DigitalDrunkenMonkey on August 28, 2004, 04:35:08 PM I heard the food in beijing sucks :/ well thats what my parents say anyway.
haven't been to beijing myself, but just visited the south of china mainly, by hong kong to guang zhou areas, about 2 years ago. Title: Adventures in China Post by: underruler on August 28, 2004, 06:03:49 PM I am not accustomed to traditional Chinese dishes.
Title: Adventures in China Post by: DigitalDrunkenMonkey on August 29, 2004, 12:10:22 AM I am, yummy as hell :)
Title: Adventures in China Post by: underruler on August 29, 2004, 12:21:19 AM I thought that meant that you were yummy as hell. I wouldn't mind a taste to prove it though :P
Title: Adventures in China Post by: DigitalDrunkenMonkey on August 29, 2004, 12:24:08 AM you still want that bottle of man juice?
Title: Adventures in China Post by: underruler on August 29, 2004, 12:25:35 AM Sure... you should come by and give it to me in person ;)
Title: Adventures in China Post by: DigitalDrunkenMonkey on August 29, 2004, 12:27:59 AM i lack the funds to send my body to america :/ but i might go over to america someday in the future, when i do you'll know about it.
Title: Adventures in China Post by: underruler on August 29, 2004, 12:28:36 AM yAy! *huggles DDM*
Title: Adventures in China Post by: Lord Lanair on August 30, 2004, 02:03:20 AM Quote I heard the food in beijing sucks :/ well thats what my parents say anyway. No to stray back on topic, but.... the food in Beijing is just like all over China (except Sichuan).... blah. I think all the food in that country is a bit too greasy and salty. ;) Title: Adventures in China Post by: underruler on August 31, 2004, 12:10:30 AM It's not like it's any better here.
Title: Adventures in China Post by: Lord Lanair on August 31, 2004, 02:37:47 AM I dunno; I can get some good Chinese food here.... it has more flavor and is... well... better. ;)
