Blah. Specialists has no Bizon, no Anaconda, and no Marine-Bot. :P

And Firearms has no Raging Bull, Golden Colts or Katanas!  Nor does it have the ability to freeze time, or anything like the realistic physics of TS.  And the TS bot AI is excellent, and highly configurable if you know what you're doing.  Howzat!  :P

Blah, only the Katana is any good there.

just replace the knife model then, not hard eh?

Yeah, but the range and damage animations would be screwed?

damage animations?   find the model that should be there (dunno are you using steam or not?) you can take the hit boxes out of that and put it into a new compile file and recompile the model with a katana and it wont change the game play

Well the bit where the blood comes out from?

Katanas are 3-4 times longer than a regular knife, so would have a further reach and would look odd when I stabbed with it.

And no I don't use Steam; it's evil!

And what's more, in TS you can run more than ten foot before you have to stop.  And a Raging Bull does more damage than a shotgun at close range!

Firearms doesn't give you frags for using skill weapons like kung-fu or throwing knives etc.   Heck, it doesn't even have throwing knives!
And TS isn't even out of the beta yet.  But we're going way off-topic here - someone should split this to the gaming forum.  Invision can split topics, yes?

And Steam is indeed evil.  Use it not.

Blah, 10 feet is only 3 metres?

You can sprint as far as that in Firearms, further if you have Battlefield Agility.

And Beta labels mean nothing.

A rough translation of the word Beta..:

We cannot be held responsible for anything that happens to your PC whilst playing this game. No we didnt put that trojan there, it must have slipped in past our coding, ah well, gutted, it was only a Beta, you can sue us, haha.

Yup. It's mostly just a way of releasing regular software but without responsibility for bugs caused by bad coding.

What a lovely unbiased topic description we have here...

Anyway, sprinting's what I meant - you can only sprint a very short distance before you slow down to such an extent that you're better off not walking at all!  I notice that you can't dive through doorways, or launch yourself through windows in Firearms, nor are the grenades as realistic.

And because TS is still in beta stage, it's still being actively developed, and we're only judging it by the features it has at the moment!  And TS is better suited to teamplay then Firearms, to boot.

You can dive through doorways... it just doesn't look like your diving through. :P

If you're good at sprinting, you can do it for a short period, hold of, sprint, hold of, and get about twice as much distance with a decent speed. It's only if you completely use up your stamina that you slow down completely.

Grenades/mines are probably over-powered in FA, though I don't know... maybe real ones are that powerful, but I'd say they're too powerful fod gameplay anyhow.

Blah, maybe I'll actually download TS later and give it a proper evaluation. :P

It's an excellent game if you take the time to learn how to use the powerups properly - and as the name says, it's The Specialists.  Whereas Firearms is just that: he who shoots wins.

Both are great games but TS>FA

(downloading now)

If I don't like this, I'm going to do something unpleasant to you. :P

ps: Anything important I should know that the manual doesn't say?

Title: Firearms vs The Specialists
Post by: Hornet on May 21, 2004, 11:44:05 AM

Make sure you read the manual, as it'll tell you about most of the powerups and special moves that you can perform, and it'll explain the scoring system.  It's possible to get 36 frags with only two kills if you know what you're doing...

It's best played against humans, but the AI is excellent on the built-in maps.  See if you can spot the code that's hiding in the dojo!

Yeah, I always at least scan manuals, usually read it fully (once it's not a million pages long), which surprises some people.

Just under a third downloaded, so far.
Downloaded and played it.

And the Specialists is nothing like Firearms. The only similarity is that they both use the same pooey engine and have guns in. :P
Specialists is more like a mix of UT, SoF and Matrix/Woo stuff.
It's also got a crapload of bugs and annoying niggles.

Still, it is only 2.1, and ignoring the irritations it is a good game, that seems to require skill, and I'm now going to come find you online and kick the crap out of you. :D

You'll have a hard time - I never play realtime games online as I have dial-up, and what's more I can't use the external mouse whilst I'm connected.   :(   And if you think I'm playing with the acupoint you've got another thing coming!

Blah, online is too laggy anyway.

Found a guy on another forum that plays it, and he hosted and it was fun. And I beat him. :D

I wish I could use double-left or double-right to dodge/roll sideways... I keep trying to because of UT. :/

Title: Firearms vs The Specialists
Post by: Hornet on May 24, 2004, 12:48:43 PM

You can stuntdive sideways, surely?  Obviously have light weapons, and then perform a high stunt left or right - I'm sure that causes a dive...  The best trick is to sneak up behind someone with a knife, and dive towards them as you throw it - 3 frags for the dive, and 3 more for the knifeplay.

Post by: SS on May 24, 2004, 01:16:22 PM
Yeah, but I'd prefer if double-tapping a sideways key would work as well as the stunt key.

Haven't used knives yet, but I'll try that later.
