Tolkin made it so that the orcs were breed from elves, in mockery of elves. But there are also dark elves according to other authers (I really don’t think Tolkin also made the Underdark, but I could be wrong). To tell you the true I don't know the exact start of the dark elves, also known as the Drow; but it was the greatest battles that pitched elf against elf, a battle of religion and pride. In the end, those that lost and somehow survived were driven deep underground, into the Underdark. There is were the drow (dark elves) came to live, and for their bitter souls fester (if they had any) (I really liked the trilady of trilogies of Drizt)
