Title: A Bit of Math
Post by: smi256 on March 20, 2004, 06:52:18 AM
The problem is to cut a 14” circle into three pieces of equal area, using just two parallel straight cuts, using an equation involving a definite integral.

I have no clue as to what to do next... :(
hell... I could just be out right wrong, and I'd be willing to bet that I am (and NO, I won't take anyone up on that offer <_< )

we should either pity him or rub it in his face.  hmmm

rub it in his face. more fun.  :)

I CAN DO INTEGRALS!!!

Now, lemme see if I can solve the problem, too.  LOL

EDIT: What on earth is the "Identity Principle?"  If you give me enough time, I can take it to my Calc teacher at school!  :hehe:

/me backs away and then shoves NS towards Smi.

Have fun ^^

just incase you couldn't sleep from your lack of help or because you just wanted to know for the hell of it.
It turns out that all I needed to do was to put it in a calc or a comp... <_<

The answer is plus and minus 1.85 inch from the center of the circle (or pizza as it was said in the actual problem)

that cant be correct.
i mean, im a dumbfuck, but even i can tell that the two outer areas are bigger than that middle area. ;)

The diagram there is drawn at ~1.4 instead of ~1.8

...meaning?

Title: A Bit of Math
Post by: SS on March 29, 2004, 02:48:52 AM
Meaning if it was drawn correctly the three sections would have the same area.

Post by: evilknight on March 29, 2004, 03:06:47 AM
but if it was drawn differently, then it wouldnt be a circle anymore.

THE TWO LINES DOWN THE MIDDLE OF IT, YOU DOLT!

Title: A Bit of Math
Post by: evilknight on March 29, 2004, 06:33:37 PM
yeah, but unless you only increased the width between them, they wouldnt be paralel anymore. ;)

I'm gonna kick you.

well then, you explain it to me in a way that sounds reasonable.

see, when you show the uneducated and uninfluenced our mathematical system, it really doesnt make any sense. :P

You guys are funny
Ya, my pic isn’t really to scale…
Give me a sec…
[Edit]
but with my bandwidth... give me an hour <_<

here it is...

and to help show the area are the same

erm... the areas dont look the same to me, and what about all the white space on bottom and top?

cut that white area off and use it to fill in the missing sections in the blue shaded area
maybe I should have done the cuts up/down rather then side-to-side..

TAHT DONT WORK!

that means that the tan part is 2 boxes wide and the blue is 3.....

 :D

im so smart

 huh?
I still got 10 out of 10 <_<
and that's all that matters (and the fact that I didn't cheat or anything) :P

omg, no wonder why i steared clear of this thread. it hurts my head just looking at it   :o  (my school is crap and i'm in 8th grade...)

LOL  you don't have to go into calculus.
it's not so bad... well, maybe if the instructor would stop messing up...
*has learned to not copy the stuff on the board to his notes till he knows it's right... <_<

i'm currently in Pre-Algebra LOL ...my teacher is the worst teacher in the entire world by far. i hate her and i can't learn :( . i know math is important but i could careless about it with her teaching it meaning that i don't get the stuff and my grades are going down...

the only thing you really can do is just go off the book, and circumvent the teacher by learning the stuff yourself rather then relying on her... that is if your class goes off a book, I don't remember pre-Alg

there are a few smart cookies here; AIM me if you want (not to imply that I'm a smart cookie or anything :P )

[Edit]
you might want to ask help from a freind in the class aswell, and hopefully they're on the same page at the class

Cuz I thought it was so stupid it's funny (In a deranged frustrated sort of way) I'd post it here.
My latest project for math class.

ehm isn't this part of the proof of e=m*c^2? cause i think we did this with physics once...
if i wasnt as busy as i am and not wanting to do any math stuff in my spare time i would check it for you :P
