Title: Stabby Slicey
Post by: SS on December 12, 2003, 12:18:28 AM
The guard is just a slab at the moment, that will be fancified later. For the moment I just want to check what people think about the shapes and sizes of the blade and handle?

I'm not sure if the blade is too short, or the handle is wrong, or something?

its pretty good, but i don't like the guard that much, cuz everything else is so smooth, but the guard is so abrupt it sorta detracts from it, but other then that i like it, altho you'd have to integrate the guard so it makes the transition from the handle to the blade, cuz the blade seems significantly larger than the handle

Ah, I see what you mean - make the guard track partially up the blade?

yeah that would be good

Hmmm, not sure how I'll do it, but I'll give it a try.

Smooth out the edges of the guard definately. Give it an elliptical shape, or a shape like <=> or (=). [=] doesnt fit too well. Otheriwise its great

Yeah, the guard needs changing. :D   I also think the handle is too narrow, and could use widening at points.  Otherwise, it looks good.  ;)

:withstupid:

That handle is going to snap, and the hilt is fugly. Other than that, its nice.

Okay, thicken the handle, smooth the guard, make it pretty and strengthen the connection. I can do that. :)

Yea, the guard squaring off at either end just doesnt go with the rest of it.
The blades nice though.

i never liked the idea of a guard...

Title: Stabby Slicey
Post by: SS on December 12, 2003, 07:15:46 PM
You'd rather lose your fingers mid-dual and not be able to grip the sword any longer? :P

Post by: opperdude on December 12, 2003, 07:17:14 PM
no but there must  e a more elegant solution... or just don't get hit
but u never see a katana with a fat guard rite?

The style of fighting with a Katana makes a Hiltguard... stupid.

Bushido duels are one blow affairs. Either one attacks and takes out his opponant in one hit, or he is blocked and its a case of who can flick their wrist quickest. You can turn a Katana through a 135* killing arc with minimal effort.

Post by: opperdude on December 12, 2003, 07:25:55 PM
well but still you wouldn't want to lose ur fingers rite :P
ow and another thing, if the guard should protect the fingers, wouldn't it be more effected if it was turned 90 degrees? cause most incoming blades would slide over the flat side of the sword, not the sharp side   :paranoid:

Okay, enough talk of losing fingers :P here's the second version:

WOOHOO!

Now the hard part... texturing. :alien:

Hmmm, blade will be silver/grey, but for the rest should I do gold, silver, bronze, or something else?

Why does the hilt look like a spindle of wool?

I like it.  :)

Because C4D's image vectorising is a bit shite.

I did like it at first, but with the texture added it looks crap, so I've removed it.

Anyhow, just adding some finishing touches, I'll upload beta1 soon. :)

Okay, I've finished fiddling and here are a couple of shots of the current version. Let me know what you think. :)

First one, time of image is early evening during the summer, so the sun is giving a very slight reddish tinge:

Next we have one taken around 2pm in April, ie: regular natural light. This one shows the hilt better than before:

I like. I like lots. Gimme one.

Apart from.. the blade is not shiny enough, perhaps? Add a little shine, but not much.

Title: Stabby Slicey
Post by: SS on December 12, 2003, 11:21:17 PM
Yay! :D

I'll have one specially made for you if you give me ten million pounds. :hehe:

Post by: Perdition on December 12, 2003, 11:26:26 PM
nice work. needs shine like matt said. and the first one looks like its supposed to be resting on the ground but is hovering instead.

Title: Stabby Slicey
Post by: SS on December 12, 2003, 11:33:57 PM
I knew someone would point out about the hovering... the handle is actually touching the ground so it's not really though. :P
I couldn't be bothered getting the exact rotation.

Also, the blade is quite shiney, but there is nothing for it to reflect other than sky, so it looks a bit plain.

I'm going to go see if anyone has a nice display scene which I can put it in to show the reflection properly.

Are you doing this for a new TGA banner or just for fun?  I think you could make a pretty sick banner out of the longer, narrower picture you made.

Title: Stabby Slicey
Post by: Saladin on December 13, 2003, 02:50:46 AM
that would be cool, but then he would have to do an axe for dwarves and bow and a quiver of arrows for us elves.

Partially fun, but mostly as a logo for something else.

Doing a TGA logo would need a bow, axe & shield too, all of which are much harder than a sword. :|

Post by: Lord Lanair on December 13, 2003, 04:48:45 AM
Me likes the sword, but I think the gold and brown of the hilt clash a little.  The hilt is better, but I say the sword should be shinier.  And the yellow spike/rasied area coming from the hilt into the length of the sword might be better as a more metallic color. ;)

I still think it's a great sword- where can I buy one?  :D

Title: Stabby Slicey
Post by: SS on December 13, 2003, 05:05:50 AM
The 'yellow' is supposed to be gold/bronze, and the 'brown' is wood. :P

Anyhow, I'm working on some updates which some other people have suggested, will post new version when done.

Yup, it really does look excellent.

I've done some last few changes (slightly less gold on hilt, slightly more shine on blade) and I think I can call the sword finished now:

You would - girls like shiny things ;) - soldiers on a battlefield would prefer not to get blinded everytime they move. :P

LOL.  grrr.  I'm not fond of stereotypes. actually I'm starting to like the second one more.  if it gets all finger smudgy it wont look as crappy as the  first one ;)

shiny things pfft. depends on what kind of shiny things your talking about. like computer games can be shiny :)  and my computer screen is shiny. those are good shiny things :D

Title: Stabby Slicey
Post by: mole on December 13, 2003, 10:36:57 PM
wow cool, blades too short though :(

whatr wrong with shinyness?!?! just means u gotta be at the front to blind the enemy

Title: Stabby Slicey
Post by: Perdition on December 13, 2003, 10:39:32 PM
its hard to tell about the blade. you cant tell how far back it goes

Title: Stabby Slicey
Post by: mole on December 13, 2003, 10:43:35 PM
its just over twice the size of the handle (look at the squares)

Title: Stabby Slicey
Post by: Rug on December 13, 2003, 10:53:55 PM
The blade is in correct proportion for a Medieval broadsword.

Title: Stabby Slicey
Post by: mole on December 13, 2003, 10:56:17 PM
*limp wristed* well hurrah...

still doesnt look right *tilts head* maybe its just the angle its from but it looks wrong needs to be thicker or long

Title: Stabby Slicey
Post by: SS on December 13, 2003, 11:25:24 PM
That image has perspective, so the blade does look a bit odd, but if Matt says the size is correct and only you are complaining, I'm willing to accept the size is correct. :P

Title: Stabby Slicey
Post by: Perdition on December 13, 2003, 11:27:15 PM
I think chances are it  would have one of the gaurd prong things tilted a bit more than the other one because it just would

Title: Stabby Slicey
Post by: RipperRoo on December 13, 2003, 11:28:12 PM
If you look at it in the right way, its fine.

Pffff who needs a shiney sword anyway?

Get urself a nice big axe!

Title: Stabby Slicey
Post by: opperdude on December 14, 2003, 10:24:40 PM
it's still hovering :)
ow and u think u can modify it so u can make it bloody and all for occasions?

ooo axes are awesome.  they are so much funner than swords

Am I too late in saying that the newest version of the sword is awesome?  Guess not!  LOL
