I'm bored, but have to wait for NWN 1.65 patch to download, so I'm going to post about my new computer. Smiley

It's an Athlon 64 Newcastle 2800+, 1GB of PC3200 RAM, and a nice black case with a quiet PSU and a temperature-regulated fan.
It's got a nice fast 200GB SATA hard-drive.
Oh and 7.1 sound on the motherboard! Cheesy
I've only got four speakers at the moment though, so I'll have to get some extra ones eventually. And a new DVD drive, because my current one is crappy.

And my download is flashing orange... and it's done. I'm going home now. If anyone really cares about my computer, I'll post more on Monday.

I would have thought that you would use a PCI sound card rather then using system resources.
But ya, what are some of the other specs of your new compy?

Meh, got plenty of system resources, and the only PCI card I've got is an 4.1 one.

Um, other specs... It's got USB2, IEEE1394, an old TEAC CD-R/W drive and a broken Samsung DVD-ROM... definitely going to have to get a new one now, probably a lovely fast NEC CD/DVD±R/W combo.
Uh, 19" Hansol monitor. Logitech MX700 mouse. Cambridge SoundWorks speakers.
Anything you want to know in particular?

about dvd burners, are there any programs that actualy use dual-layer?  because I saw a $100 dual-layer burner in the fry's ads, cuz, I might be in the market. heh, maybe I should findout if I could even use such a feature... Tongue

I'm not sure if you can buy DVD burners that don't also do CD burning? :/

As for dual-layer apps... no idea. I'm more interested in just being able to read any disc I happen to get.

I had just downloaded a TV show I used to watch Gargoyles (it went to cable, which I don’t have) and for me to burn it to CDs, it took 30, where as with DVDs, it would have taken only 3… <_<
As it is, I might need a new CD ROM, but if I can, I'd like to get something better, namely a DVD burner. Cheesy

I’ve looked into DVD burners.  Double layer is exactly that, instead of the normal 4.7 GB, you can have up to 7.96 GB.  The only problem is: finding Dual layer DVDs, paying possibly five times more then normal, and being stuck at about 2.4x write speed.

Other facts are that DVD burners may very well be stuck with a maximum write speed of 16x, and to even write that fast your burner has to have support (updated firmware) for that model code (the manufacturer may not actually make the DVDs, so not all DVDs from a particular vender may work with your DVD.  This should be fixed with time)

Also, DVD-R is less versatile then DVD+R (should work with TV DVD players).  When a burner is advertised as “multi-format” it just means that it will write both DVD-R and DVD+R.

Site: Tom's Hardware - Double-Layer DVD
Some more recent comparison: Tom's Hardware - 10 DVD Burners: 16x and Dual-Layer - or Nothing!
