Hmmm, hows about this:

$35 - 1.3GHz Duron
$41 - SocketA Motherboard, onboard Audio & LAN cards
$33 - 256MB PC2100 DDR-RAM
$35 - Geforce 2 MX
$70 - 40GB 7200RPM Western Digital Caviliar
$20 - Midi Tower case

That comes to $234, which is over the budget, though you could squeeze that down by getting SD-RAM instead of DDR-RAM, and a smaller hard-drive, but that depends on how flexible your budget is...

That wasn't spam, it was a funny joke. :P

Thusa, those prices are from ebuyer.com which doesn't have a great reputation over in Britain, but does have decent prices.
As for building a computer, no it isn't hard (says the person who hasn't actually built one :miffed:) because all the bits just slot together really. It might be best if you know a techy/geeky person that would be willing to help to ask them, but if not then there are plenty of websites with helpful hints and stuff.

You mean a base unit comprising of Athlon 2500, 512MB DDR RAM and a 40GB HDD?
Shouldn't be more than £400 for a basic system. Decent gpu, monitor, mouse, etc will add a couple of hundred onto that.

http://www.pcmech.com/byopc/index.htm (http://www.pcmech.com/byopc/index.htm)

i was lookin around a bit and stumbled onto this website...this guy seems to know what hes talking about more or less...although...since i dont really have the choice of buying online (im 15 w/o a credit card) im going to have to look around for the cheap parts that i need...i might be able to get my grandfather (he buys mad stuff online) to buy it and i will pay him back cash, which sounds like a good idea from my point of view...i still need to find someone to oversee this whole operation of mine who has a good knowledge of computers and is willing to share it...

First question - is the ethernet card connected to the network server/hub/router.

Second: If so, are you using the correct sort of cable: there are two types, straight and crossover, I think you need the latter for DSL.

Next: Are other computers connected? If so are you able to swap you ethernet card with theirs, and see if either computer can connect.
(if yours can, the card is broken; if yours cannot, the card probably isn't broken but your machine/settings are; if theirs cannot (but could before) then the card is broken; if theirs can still connect, the card works and your machine/settings are not correctly setup).

Finally: What version of Windows have you got running on your 'new' machine?

Title: Buying a Computer

1. router

2. ehh...not sure...

3. swapping would take some time...so i cant answer that cuzz my bro prolly wont wanna participate...

4. win98

Okay, make sure everything is plugged in & switched on, then open IE and type http://192.168.254.254 (http://192.168.254.254) into the address bar. If that gives an error, try 192.168.0.1. Also, make sure that if you have a firewall installed, that you have it turned off, or at least allowing all traffic through.

an internal error occured in the windows internet connects...thats what i says when i try those addresses...im not quite sure what it means :/

Title: Buying a Computer
Post by: SS on August 11, 2003, 10:15:32 PM
Internal Error... that's both good and bad.

Good because it means the problem is before the network.
Bad because I am not actually sure where the problem is.

Does going to other web pages ( http://www.yahoo.com/ (http://www.yahoo.com/) or http://127.0.0.1/ (http://127.0.0.1/) ) give the same or a different error?

Title: Buying a Computer
Post by: Thusa on August 11, 2003, 11:25:18 PM
yeah...going to any web pages gives the same error...and when i open ie...it starts off with this navigator thing...even when i put a home page on

those links describe the errors that might have occured with page loading...like...if you were going to a page on clicked stop  :hmmm:

Hmmm, I'm going to have to consult with the Networking Gods and see if they can help with finding a solution.

Title: Buying a Computer
Post by: SS on August 12, 2003, 09:23:27 PM
Oooh, something I should have asked already...

Open Device Manager (WinKey+Pause, select from there somewhere) then look down to Network adapters.
Clicking the plus should expand the list to show your ethernet card.
Double-click (or Right-click:properties) and check the Device status box - does it have anything in there?

Also, try checking the Resources tab to see if any conflicts are listed, if there are then we'll work on how to remove them, but hopefully there wont be.

Oh, and if you could post the name of your ethernet card (which will be near the top of the properties window), that would also be useful.

Post by: Thusa on August 13, 2003, 04:31:17 AM
device status - everything is working properly

conflicts - none

name of ethernet: D-Link DFE-350TX+PCI adapter

thanx a bunch so far SS...i owe you

are you willing to buy parts and assemble one yourself? It's the cheapest way to go and you'll get exactly what you want; you won't have to settle for what the company offers. I and several of the other techies here could offer some assistance in the assembly process if you needed it, and theres some walkthroughs on how to assemble a pc if youre up for it.

Title: Buying a Computer
Post by: FragMaster1972 on September 07, 2003, 05:00:35 AM
Well first things first: If youre not looking to spend a lot, Intel CPUs and NVidia GFX are out of the question.
An AMD Athlon XP 1800 runs at 1.53 ghz, only costs $50.
An ATi Radeon 8500 will run around $70.
PC2100 DDR Ram 256mb - $31, 512mb - $64.
60gb Western Digital Hard Drive - $55.
Asus A7S333 Mobo - $55
Soundblaster Audigy - $50 (optional, mobo has built in sound, but audigy is much nicer)
Ethernet card - $10 (only if you use broadband)
Lite-On 40x10x40 cdrecorder - $31
Samsung 48x cdrom - $17 (only need it if you want to do direct cd-to-cd copies w/o copying to hard drive first)
case - $20-30 for a cheap generic one, $50-100 for a nice one

add that up and see if you like the price  :D  there's still some other things (cables, keyboard, mouse, speaks) but that stuff doesn't cost too much, and you could always use your current ones if ya wanted.

*writes it all down* damn thats kool man but i would need somebody to do it for me and thats a hassel, but i might consider. Today i went to costco and saw a emachine with 2400 AMD xp processor, 512mb ddr and S3Prosavage8. It comes with a cd/rw and dvd drives, speakers subwoofers, keyboard, mouse, and a 17" flat panel monitor. Does that sound cool or should i just build my own.

Title: Buying a Computer
Post by: FragMaster1972 on September 07, 2003, 05:20:58 PM
whats the price for that? and s3savage sucks, can you upgrade that?  ya know, you could always find a small computer store (not a place like best buy, circuit city, etc. some small privately owned place) and have them build one for you. You still get to pick what you want, without all the bs the big companies give. emachines isnt as bad as the rest, but they still irritate me.

none? you're not looking hard enough, there's gotta be one somewhere. look in the yellow pages, probably under computer repair. most likely sales will list major companies, repair should have the smaller businesses. personally, id recommend looking into a custom-built (even if not self-built) computer over any preassembled one, but....... *shrugs* your money.

Title: Buying a Computer
Post by: Yaza2 on September 08, 2003, 03:32:51 PM

within limits. I dunno bout emachines, but some companies put special adapters and stuff in their systems so you have to upgrade through them. again, limiting your options and forcing you to spend more than necessary. and their systems usually arent meant to be easy to work inside like a custom system--wires everywhere, hard to access stuff, no rolled edges=cuts, etc. but once again.....your money.

if you insist on buying from a major company, then Alienware is the best you're gonna do. Falcon NW is pretty damn good from what I hear too. Dell, Gateway, HP, Compaq, and any others that im forgetting suck. didnt include macs cause it goes w/o saying that they suck.
