Title: Decent Book
Post by: Godfather on October 03, 2005, 09:24:02 PM
I have been thinking that I should start reading something, besides the same Rolling Stone magazine I have been reading for the past month.

Any good books out there that are a must read? I am open to nearly anything, considering I have no knowledge of this kind of thing whatsoever. Thanks.

I don't like Terry Pratchett.

Read A Game Of Thrones (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0553381687/103-9131438-8573441?v=glance) by George R R Martin.

The Lord of the Rings is actually a single book - it was split into three by the publishers.

Oh my goodness, someone on this forum actually knows that!

Most people look at you stupidly and say 'no, there are three books, dude'.  So I've grown slightly accustomed to referring to LoTR as three books.  Should you be interested in any Tolkien-ish information, the forum The Grey Havens (http://tolkien.cro.net/board/index.php) is a plethora of information, even though it's mostly dead now.  I'm Mithrandir there.

Jk, actually, that's pretty much exactly what it is.  It's a history of the Elves.  If you're interested in the 'backhistory', so to speak, of LoTR, The Silmarillion is a great read.  If your teacher forced your class to read LoTR, you'll ritually burn the entire series when you're done and never touch any other Tolkien books.

hmm having dropped any class involving literature now, the last 2 books i was forced to read and write a piece of coursework for were, Tess of the Durbeyvilles and A Kestral for a Knave. to date ive read neither, i tuned out on the audiobook of tess' and managed to watch the film Kes for the other. but i did manage to do the essays

no i live in the UK, so in school and doing mechanics or what have you outside in industry, everyone uses mm, cm... but in everyday life ask someone how far away something is and theyll tell you in miles or yards, ask how  heavey they are and youll get an answer in stone and pounds, then hieghts in feet and inches...... wierd isnt it?

never heard of stone, but yea that is weird. the metric system rocks and all but its like another language, you are just translating it into what you know and are familiar with. you could say 40 meters, and i wouldn't have a good estimate on how far that is. kinda like with time, i hate military time because all i do is convert it to what i already know..

I hate having to worry about if it’s AM or PM, but in “military time” (universal time) I don’t have a good feel of what time it is…17:00…just by looking at it I can’t tell it’s 5:00, but I automatically know it’s PM…
I don’t work with time enough to become familiar with it.

No idea what mole just said, so I will just take a guess.

Time - Hour:Minnute:Second, yes seperated by colons.

Dates - Month Day, Year, yes comma between day and year.

For money and such, its $3.50. Decimal point to show the seperation of dollars and cents.

Not many people, at least from what I have seen, put the time and date all together like mole showed.

The Dark Elf Trilogy
It’s a part of a trilogy of trilogies…something like that; The Dark Elf Trilogy being the first, The Icewind Dale Trilogy, and Legacy of the Drow, all by R.A. Salvatore.  A problem with the books ifs that it becomes repetitive (which didn't bother me too much untill the last book), but a good read anyways.   :)

Meh, I didn't like the 2nd one as much, I forget the title, (After the Chocolate War?) but I wanted to kill Archie at the end of it. The first one was great and real psychological
indeed, right title and all, not as good no, but i wanted more! so i liked it :)

oddly enough, I haven't actually read the new Harry Potter book :(

Notes that I also have a couple chapters (a few hundred pages too many) to read for a midterm that starts in only a few hours :paranoid:

i liked it a lot, the characters were a lot more mature, the plot was as well, i think she's writes better in later books then the first 2

The author’s life has changed significantly because of those books.  That and the story is now rolling, which allows for a more interesting story. IMHO

yea i can't imagine her finishing it in the next book. especially being that she said they weren't going to get any bigger than number 5.

i'm addicted and don't care, but after the immediate withdrawal i went through after reading 6, i'm patient..

Which fandom(s)?

And it serves you right for not reading the warnings properly.  :P  But look on the bright side, at least it wasn't a lemon, or even slash for that matter.

when I ended up with that 'lime', I quickly found out what a 'lemon' was, but I have no idea what a 'slash' is

I think the only thing it takes to make a story a ‘lemon’ or ‘lime’ is that the character(s) are put in (otherwise out of character) situations/relationships o_O and get worse from there on.  I forgot which one is worse though.

Hence why you should browse by the number of reviews, not the titles. :P
