So, yeah, I kinda dissappeared for a bit. And I'm not back yet. But I'm not dead either.

Only Internet access I currently have is at work, and they wouldn't like me coming on here "wasting" time (except outside work hours, like now).
Can't get Internet at my flat (no phoneline [yet?]), but I'm going to go into town today and see about getting one of those fancy Mobile Phone/PDA things with GPRS Internet access. My brother has got a little Nokia thing that works quite well, but hopefully I can get one with a bigger screen than his. And other fancy stuff to boast about. :D

Hopefully I'll be properly back soon, but if anyone wants to contact me urgently in the meantime (unlikely, but anyhow...) then e-mail me, because I can't check my PMs without logging in here (which I don't want to do, from here).

I'm guessing that Cable still requires some sort of... um, cable-type hardware-installation thing?

Still got to speak to my landlady, but I'm fairly sure she'll not agree to anything that involves drilling holes, trailing wires, or anything like that. :(

Anyhow, got some phone-guide-booklet things to look at, but lunchtime is over in... 0 minutes, so I'll have to do that after work.

It's not that, but more the fact that it's a nice old house, and she might not want to have someone making potentially messy/damaging changes to it.
But I'm just guessing; she might not care and will say "yeah, go ahead, do what you like". :unsure:

For my cable, there wasn't a thing like that. If you already have cable tv, you just get a cable modem that hooks up to your TV through one of the slot/thingys in the back. No drilling with us.

really? with my cable they added new ports which involves drilling through outer walls, we have one for the TV, one for the PC and one where the PC used to be which can still be used if you go outside and reconnect it to the junction box

Yeah, with mine they had to drill through the walls too.  And crawl through the attic.  And mess with our phone box.  And go into the garage for something else too.  And install a box of some sort in the garage.  

I didn't have to do that, but there is a really long cable that runs in our house. :/

Yeah. We just have a cable from the TV to the modem. Thats it.

Same here but ofcourse you could take wireless internet  :P

we didn't need any drilling until we wanted to hardwire a network between our two computers, our cable modem was in the basement and the compys got internet from the phone jacks.

but  now, of course, my dad and i moved out of that house and we took a computer with us, so there's only one computer there now :)

Meh, when my brother first decided he wanted internet access (a few years ago), they drilled a telephone wire through MY room to service him.  That's the reason I first started using the internet.. it was just... there!

When we got cable, though, only my mom's room needed ripping up (since hers holds the wireless station).  :)

my grandmother has dial-up, that's where i am now, i was just explaining the set-up at my mom's house before we moved out

That's the problem - I don't have any connections at all. :P
Except electicity. And water. Maybe if I mix them together I can get an Internet line? :D


That's one of the options I'm looking at.

The cards designed for laptops are stupidly expensive though (and that assumes I could get an adapter for my main PC)

Been looking at various handheld Internet devices, but they're never clear on if they have proper HTTP/HTML internet, or some inferior crap.
The T-Mobile Sidekick looks promising though... if that's available in the UK. :/ (could only find it on US site)

I really need to go into the store and ask the people and hope they're a bit smarter than the regular trained monkeys...
