Title: My Comp SUX (help?)
Post by: Drauka on June 18, 2004, 09:37:26 AM
Ok I am using a windows '98 from way back in 98 when they were cool, lol.

But I think I finally got a virus after all of these long years of fateful workingness.

Something is constantly writing to my C: drive. I cannot defrag and I cannot check for errors. Now my soundcard is fecking up and it only plays movie sounds. No windows errors, or winamp or real player when it is just an audio file. But only mpg/mpeg/avi/etc.

When I ctrl alt delete it only shows Explorar as running.

I am going to kill myself if I cant listen to Jim Croce in the next 3 days.

As a matter of fact... *Slits his throat on an atom bomb*

Is it connected to the Internet?

First thing I'd check is for spyware.
Download & install Adaware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) and Spybot (http://www.spybot.info/index.php?page=mirrors) and run them.
Then restart into safe-mode and run them both again.

Definitely sounds like some sort of spyware, or possibly a virus, then.

Run the two pieces of software linked above and see if they help.

Also, if it is a virus, you might want to check any other computers you have are not infected - even if they're not acting oddly, it might be a 'time-bomb' style virus, so doing an anti-virus scan now would be a good idea.
If you don't have any anti-virus, then AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php) is a good free option.

Im almost done downloading spybot, ok now im done, but the other link is blocked to me. My ISP has the website blocked. :(

Ok, first go shout at your idiot ISP.

Second, go download it from here:
http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910...page&tag=button (http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button)

And if that still doesn't work, let me know and I'll host it.

Yeah, Norton is useless really. AVG is smaller and less resource-hungry.

Its blocking it there too for the same reason. "Chat."

I could bypass it, but then they call my parents up and my parents think im looking at porn, LOL.

Anyhow, I uploaded it to my server:

Hopefully that's not blocked, or I'd have to go kill them! ;)

SS you know that Ad-aware thing...is it bad if you don't get anything when you're done scanning...b/c I get little to nothing when I scan.

Title: My Comp SUX (help?)
Post by: SS on June 21, 2004, 12:43:16 AM
No, it's good when you don't get anything - it means your machine is probably clean.

You should run it alongside SpyBot though, because they both find things the other one doesn't.

I do but it still feels like my computer is slower than it should be.

Title: My Comp SUX (help?)
Post by: SS on June 21, 2004, 01:09:24 AM
Ok, Press Ctrl-Shift-Esc to bring up the Task Manager, then click the Processes tab.

Then View>Select Columns, and tick CPU Usage, Memory Usage, and Peak Memory Usage are ticked (leave everything else either ticked or not ticked; whatever it was originally).

You shouldn't have more than 20-25 things in there, and there should be one called System Idle Process which is using almost all of the CPU ~90% most of the time. Nothing should be using much more than 25000K memory, peak or current.

If anything is doing anything different to that (or if you just want to) then take a screenshot and post it here, and I'll see if I can spot anything odd running. :)

No, Ctrl-Esc brings up the Start Menu. Ctrl-Shift-Esc brings up Task Manager

Quote

:hmmm: No I didn't. Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't work on some setups - it will bring up a seperate menu which then requires you to click a button to get the Task Manager. Ctrl-Shift-Esc works on all NT-based OSs, which includes XP.

You are using Windows XP under?

My Firefox has a peak of 50k and is usually around 26k, is this a bad thing?

Title: My Comp SUX (help?)
Post by: SS on June 21, 2004, 02:53:16 PM
Considering it's supposed to be less resource-intensive than IE, of which mine is usually around 25,000K and the current peak is ~38,972K, then yes that's a bad thing.

Like the ones at UH for starters. Other places too.

The point is that Ctrl-Shift-Esc (should) always works, Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't. :P

I pay for them both.
The forums (and the rest of bpsite.co.uk) are hosted in Docklands, London, UK.
Hybridchill.com is hosted somewhere in the US somewhere... timezone is GMT-5, but I don't know more than that.

Title: My Comp SUX (help?)

Title: My Comp SUX (help?)
Post by: underruler on June 21, 2004, 09:37:23 PM
I dunno...I heard it sucks and I've been thinking about getting XP but then I don't know what to do.  But it does seem that it my computer was faster when we got it.  It's prolly b/c we've had it since 6 years ago I think.  I don't really remember.

Title: My Comp SUX (help?)
Post by: SS on June 21, 2004, 09:39:20 PM
Yeah, computers always slow down inexplicably. Part of it's due to the hard-drive getting clogged with stuff, but even if you reformat & reinstall it's never as fast as when you first got it.

Hmmm. If it's 6 years old it might not be able to handle XP. :/
If it can, you should get it though - XP is far more stable than Me.

well SS do you have some other cool stuff that I could use?
i need a new movie player
My current player (windows media) is buggy, and when I updated it stoped working entirely

Winamp v 5 is pathetically resoruce hungry, though the orignals isn't. They dont provide uprages for them (angry)

And real player will no longer do updates for me. So. Uh. Show me some wicked ninja stuff! :D LOL      :P  ;)

Title: My Comp SUX (help?)
Post by: SS on June 23, 2004, 10:56:58 AM
Real player is a pile of cack... even if you don't use it, it could still be running on your PC and slowing things down. I'd suggest removing it completely, unless you really need it.

Um, I use Windows Media Player 9 here, and it works fine, but there are some others you could look at...

I used to use Sonique (http://sonique.lycos.com) for a while, and it was quite good.

I've heard of people who say MusicMatch Jukebox (http://www.musicmatch.com/) is really good.

There's also dbPowerAmp audio player (http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dbpoweramp.htm), but I think that's a bit eughy looking.

There's probably a few more, but those are the main ones I know of.

"CTRL - Shift - Esc" doesnt open a task bar for me.

Is there a program (or command) that makes it so Exporer is the onlything to start when you boot your computer up.

And one that tells you ALL the programs running? "CTRL - Alt - Del" doesnt show them all

Safe mode will do that. However it also doesn't load any proper graphics drivers, so you get stuck with an ugly display.
Um, other than that, you can try holding down shift as you login (until after everything finishes loading), but that doesn't always work for everything.

Quote

You could try opening a command window and typing "tasklist /svc /fo csv", but I'm not sure if that will work with all versions of windows. Try "tasklist /?" and it will tell you more options about it though.
As for proper Windows applications, I've not heard of any, but there probably are some available.

start->run->msconfig. hit the startup tab. you can uncheck everything you dont want starting with your computer. It won't get everything, but it's a start.

if you're on xp, ctrl-alt-del and go to the processes window. oughta have everything.
