Title: I think I have a virus
Post by: Galmort on November 13, 2003, 10:25:13 PM
My computer sucks and i think it also has a virus. it's like 6 months old so there is no reason why it should be better      :( . When i close out of programs, the image of them just stays there. the program or window is not open though. just the image of it is like fused to the desktop. that is really annoying, and i haven't posted for awhile cuz IE is actin up. new desktop shortcuts are poppin out of nowhere.         i'm so dumb. and to top it all off, my chest hurts and it's turning into back pain. so much for your "happy" thread mole.   . oh yeah, and another thing is, i can't even find norton anti-virus it like disapeared unless i'm just overlooking it. My whole family has to deal with this too so we need help. :hmmm:

*crack crackle pop*
oh ya, I'm my own chiropractor, I just wish I could give my self a back massage.  I can just about reach all the way, but it’s really hard to relax when doing it.

I find it odd, a friend of mine was saying something his computer having similar symptoms as yours (no, not chest and back pain).  He said he got some casino game icons in his desktop…and that his computer and internet were running slow, as if some other demanding program were running and using his connection…

I'd recommend running--though I don't have a link handy--Ad-Aware. It finds an eliminates spyware/adware/etc, which is usually a source of desktop icons spawning on their own and a sluggish computer. I know exactly what you mean with the programs "fusing" to the desktop, as it happens to me sometimes too. I'd check it with an anti-virus as well, however.

Ad-aware is linked to from here: http://www.bpsite.co.uk/?page=Tools&cat=All (http://www.bpsite.co.uk/?page=Tools&cat=All)
(because I can't be bothered checking which of the various lavasoft URLs floating in my head is the correct one)

My friends figured it’d be better to just back everything up and format his hard drive.  Just to get all the crap out of there, like: corrupt files, unused registry entries, files from games long since “uninstalled”, and whatever ad-ware, spy-ware, or worms (very very few viruses out there anymore) he might have gotten from his extensive downloading and web surfing practices.

Overkill perhaps, but fair enough.

Make sure they install AVG, Ad-aware and a decent firewall straight after re-installation though, just to be fully safe. :)

I told him to use ad-aware, the thing is that he doesn't know how to use ir or his v-scan.  he's also behind a router, does that mean he doesn't need a firewall?

I don't know how to use firewalls. they seem to just get in my way...

Hmmm, the router might have a firewall, but better safe than sorry. If he's in XP, you can just tick a box and have the built-in firewall activated. Doesn't help against things that are already on the machine, but prevents things getting on it, if I understand it properly, which I might not do.

Using anti-virus software is simple - just install it, and any time you download something, right-click & scan it. Any time he suspects something odd, do a complete scan. Simple.

I don't know how to use XP (mostly because I'm using 98), but where do you turn on the firewall?
I have McAfee v-scan, I have it set to scan any and all created, copied/moved files
hehehe, the last time I used Norton, it thought part of my OS was a virus.  warning virus Windows 95 detected LOL  (that shows how long it's been since I've used norton...win95)

Many routers have a built it firewall, but that wont stop everything. I'm behind a router and use Norton Personal Firewall anyway. I don't bother with the built in Windows firewall though, its crap. If you want to try it, however, you can do it by finding your interner connection (look in the control panel, there should be one for network or somethin like that. The connection you want it Local Area Connection if you are on DSL, Cable, or the like. right-click the connection, go to properties, advanced, and check the box  by Internet Connection Firewall.

Im using the Windows XP firewall, which is probably very shit, but atleast its something, and my router has a firewall.
I was thinking of Dling a free firewall, but then Aurug told me most free firewalls suck.

I'm using Kerio (http://www.kerio.com/us/kpf_home.html), which is supposed to be good; and it does have a lot of fancy options, but I don't know how well it actually works.

hay Evil, that sounds like fun, can I come over?
my friend used to make "CD soup", he'd boil the CD in water and the label comes off, then he has all these clear CDs he uses for coasters.
but mine are better, mine have designs drawn on them with sharpy pens

bah, i prefer my way. but it's even more fun with a friend. with a bit of practice, they can get it so that they can throw em without makes them turn or anything. so u yell PULL! and they throw, and u shoot em. (the disks, i mean)

theres a group that collects em, and when they get 1 million or something like that, they're gonna dump em either at aol hq or the head aol dude guys (cant remember his name atm) house, dont remember which, but its a great idea.

If they deliver them to AOL then anything AOL try to sue them over, the whole frigging population of the US, UK and anywhere else that the stupid feckers spam will be sueing AOL over the same thing. :D

I think that AOL buttmunch's name is Steve Case, but I could be wrong.  Anyway, what was that thing smi was talking about with his friend formatting his hard drive.  I probably need something like that.  Isn't there someone that could just fix up my computer by PERMANENTLY removing all the harmful crap that's on it?  Kinda like detailing a car.
