wait wait, i thought you disabled guest posting?

Nope. Registration was disabled for a bit, and now requires vegetable identification, but guest posting is still enabled.

So, Hornet - how do you feel about writing an Invision mod that strips links from guest posts? :)

You've seen the state of Invision's codebase - give me a few tablets of LSD and I'll consider it. :P

Seriously, maybe.  We'd still be attacked by large quantities of random posts though, some pornographic and rather dubious, the links aside.  I'll see about tying the Captcha into the guest posting system, but as said, that'll require a hefty dose of psychotropics before it even begins to make sense.

As funny as Hornet on psychotropics could potentially be ... why not just have guest posting disabled?

how dare you even think of suggesting something so sensible

Because guest posting is a vital component of a Free, Open and Accessible Internet, and I wont sacrifice that just because of some spamming arseholes.

Registering costs no money, requires only a valid email address and doesn't have giant padlocks on it. Free, accessible AND open!

"costs no money" - I said Free (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gratis_versus_Libre), not free.

"requires only a valid email address" - which reduces Accessibility.

"doesn't have giant padlocks" - no, just giant fruits. :P

When you're walking down the road, you don't have to carry an ID card if you want to have a conversation with people, nor do you have to answer riddles or pat your head whilst rubbing your belly.
So why should you be forced to do so on the Internet?

Because the spam is getting real old now and would go away if you turned guests off :).

Apparently so. :)

SS - however, if people walking down the street started randomly talking to strangers using rubbish grammar and trying to offer them badly made porn, everyone'd probably stop going out in public and we'd all have to get special permission from the government to have the ability to speak.

And when you accept their offer of badly made porn you get ill and need reformatting.

Which would be a sign that the police force is shit and needs fixing.

Unfortunately I can't de-analogise the police force into Internet terms. :(

But I can for the concept of putting a muzzle around strangers which detects rubbish and prevent anyone else from hearing it.
ie: Filter all guest postings through Akismet (http:////akismet.com).

Or at least, I could do that if there was an IPB plugin for it.

But there is a generic PHP library which looks simple enough to use... watch this space:

Hooray!

Akismet is now implemented, for guest users only.

One tiny small miniscule flaw though.... it's claiming everything I send is spam, even when it blatantly isn't. :(

And with PHP being as shit as it is, and Invision being a million times shitter, debugging it is like trying to pull a worm out your arse with your elbows.

Sounds uncomfortable. Creative use of imagery, though.  <_<
