Title: Busy Summer
Post by: matt_the_shark on June 13, 2005, 03:43:39 AM
I'm probably not gonna be around that much over the summer because I've got a bunch of stuff going on.  Exams start this week and end next week.  Also, I'm going to make a major effort to lose some weight mostly over the beginning of the summer.  I want to go down to about 185 pounds, so I've got somewhere around 15-20 pounds to lose, which means I've got a lot of work to do.  I'm probably not gonna lose it all just over the summer, so if I lose 10 pounds then I'll be happy for now.  Also, I'm gonna be at a couple Boy Scout related events from the 24th of July to around the 16th of August, so that takes off about three weeks.  And then I'm gonna be working at the state fair, which is at the end of august, so I'm really busy this summer.  I'm gonna try to get on here, but it's not gonna be nearly as often as it has been, so I'm just giving you guys fair notice.  Now then, lanair, be a good spammer and make some extra posts to make up for me, and someone needs to sink the sharker boats and submarines, while I'm gone, too.  :P LOL

anyway, just letting you guys know, I'll try to keep in touch

LOL... keep going, it's worth it.  Got mine back in November (was a life scout for two whole years, gah).  Just the project left, or do you have a few required badges still?

/me is unhappy about his boy scouts... the leaders just pansied around and went camping and stuff.  It was fun and all (most of it I guess) but we didn't get our badges even if we completed them... :(

What's so exciting about boy scouts that so many of you are members?  I thought it was a group for like pre-middle school people...

is that why you aren't a boy scout?  LOL

you can be in boy scouts till your 18.  if you aren't an eagle scout by then, you're kicked out.

in general it's called 'boy scouts', these are separators by age and somewhat rank (tasks, badges)

tiger scouts
cub scouts
boy scouts
eagle scouts

What's your job? :o

*hits Lanair with stick* Actually, it's boring as hell.

And the reason I did Boy Scouts was just to go camping, hiking, canoing, etc... general outdoors stuff that I wouldn't do otherwise.  As long as there enough people your age in your troop, it's pretty fun.  When it gets to the point that they're all 3+ years younger, and only a few of your friends are left (everybody else quit, made Eagle, moved, etc), though, it's time to leave.

I *was* a girl scout, but then the troop disbanded.

PS- I tutor childrens at this center.  Minimum wage.  bleh.  At least it involves no fryers.

    OK, quick lesson.

there are seven ranks of boy scouting, and there is a list of requirements to reach each of the ranks.  here's the ranks:

    scout
    tenderfoot
    second class
    first class
    star
    life
    eagle

The scout through first class requirements are relatively easy.  For star and life, you have to perform a certain number of community service hours, and obtain a certain number of merit badges, some of which have to be from the list of those required for eagle.  Then, for eagle, you have to plan a service project, have it approved by various sources, organize the project, and run it yourself.  These projects usually have a total of over 100 man hours, but there is no specific requirement.  Then, you have to fill out the application, get some references, and turn all of that stuff in before your 18th birthday.  After this, you have to go infront of the Eagle board of review, and they will basically decide whether you will get your eagle scout award or not.  Then they send the stuff down to the national office in texas, and they approve it, and bam, you're and eagle scout.
