Title: Guild Wars
Post by: Everous on April 03, 2005, 10:50:33 PM
kk...who's going to play Guild Wars?

If anyone is...can I get an idea of what builds you'll be running...and to what extent you've crashtested these?

I intend to beta test it over the April 17th weekend to see what its like, and if I like it, I'll be getting it.
At the moment a Ranger/Elementalist is looking fun.

Bugger, you need to have pre-ordered it to participate in beta weekend. Don't suppose you have and have the friends pass not used do you?

afraid not my man ;)

but it'd be a shame for you to not even try the thing...to be honest I haven't been on the last 2 beta events either...

Ranger/Ele huh?...you going for interrupts or nukes primarily?

i tried to play it way back in the E3 weekend beta thing.
what little i could see was lots of fun, and that's with me dealing with a horrible connection and serious issues with getting it to even work.
still looks great.

also, i have this funny feeling that Blizzard will be releasing a lot more awsome stuff around the time Guild Wars starts.....
gee, i wonder why......*sarcasm*
but yeah, ill definately give Guild Wars a try when it releases.

i'm not to worried...the two games don't draw from the same crowd

most of the people who plays Guild Wars play team games or FPS like CS or Warcraft III...not RPG or MMORPG games

CS and Warcraft 3 were my mainstead games for a while, yah.
Still definately gonna check it out when it releases.

I'm baaaaaacckkkkk....
Only for a little while.

I missed out on that April 17 Weekend Event, gah.

My favorite build:
Elementalist/Monk.

A wonderful mass-killing tank against weak opponents(so many auto-healing continual-effect spells, oh my!), it can kill monsters quickly if needed(60damage fireballs and who-knows-what damage with meteor storm), and does wonders in team/co-op missions(130+ heal other)

I'd try an Elementalist/Ranger and Warrior/Monk, but the El/Mo build is my top build.

First impressions, I played with an elementalist last night and got to level 5. Its a pretty damn nice looking game, and I'm turning into a bit of a pyromaniac with that fire blast spell.
Its lacking something that WoW has though, and I think its because of the instanced areas outside of towns, you really have to be part of a group to fully appreciate the game, whereas in WoW you meet people as you wander around, which I feel is a better idea.

So someone get the damn game and play with me!

Oh yea, have some pictures...

ok I've spent a few months debating the various mechanics of the game...so I can say perhaps that I am a bit of a guru at this...

If anyone wants to party or wants to discuss builds with me (trust me, I make damn good builds) then get me on MSN Scilus@hotmail.com Email Everous@gmail.com INgame Ae Toutatis

I see you're still in pre-searing...well have fun, I got a little further when i first beta tested...so i kinda rushed through that portion in about 40 mins. Ripper...why am i not surprised you're using the skimpy ele?

Title: Guild Wars
Post by: RipperRoo on April 29, 2005, 08:04:33 PM
Well, I had no idea what pre-searing and post-searing are, let alone how to trigger the searing.
Got a level 6 Ele/Necro, going for the hp drain with the necro and fire damage and energy storage with the Ele.
A level 3 Monk/Mes, gonna go healing and damage with the monk with more damage from the Mes.
And a ranger, which I didn't get on with.

Why does the world map on some sites look about 1million times the size of the area Ive got on my map? I mean, the lowest point on mine is the Wizards.. whatchamajigger, with Ascalon City at the top, wheres the rest??

Level 3 Necromancer here.. and whoring Life Siphon like a bitch.

Don't see much point to multiclassing currently... but I'm a newbie. Someone explain why I should bother?

Title: Guild Wars
Post by: RipperRoo on April 29, 2005, 09:40:11 PM
Because Ev is a PvP whore...

Nah, multiclassing allows you to scab all the decent stuff from other classes, its how you make classes of your own really.
Such as a Warrior/Monk can be turned into a Palidin, and a Necro/Ranger can be a summoner by combining the Necro summoning with the Rangers pet.

Title: Guild Wars
Post by: Everous on April 29, 2005, 11:45:57 PM
why not?

it dosen't hurt you...and all the pro builds require 2 classes

Title: Guild Wars
Post by: Rug on April 30, 2005, 12:45:50 AM
I'm not in it for a pro build, I can do that on NWN anyday.. I like sucking things lives out and animating the corpses of my fallen foes.

I really love how there's no limit on the number of animated servants you can have. *Kills gargoyles and raises each corpse in turn*

Maybe I'll multiclass sometime, just not today :).

some day soon I'll upgrade this computer to the point were I could play these games.  I think I'll for it this summer if I don't end up taking classes and or a job...

I don't see official sanctioned NWN league tables...

Worlds At War combat between NWN playing countries...International tournaments with competing guilds flown in...this is more like pro CS than NWN

PvP here is the core of the game...you're going to miss a lot if you don't take part in it...and for me at least since its a COMPETITION it pays to be competetive...thusly...pro builds

but since you're a necro anyway...speaking simply in terms of PvP effectiveness and efficiency...I have a special place reserved for necros right in between my butt cheeks.
though for PvE heres the best summoning build you're gonna get:

http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/showpos...577&postcount=6 (http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/showpost.php?p=30577&postcount=6)

that is a RED HOT build...in the end you can summon up to 17 level 18 minions to do your bidding...and simply steamroller through a level with sheer weight of numbers.

Post by: Rug on May 01, 2005, 12:01:36 PM
Yes, but making an uber build and kicking people with it, in a system I fully, 100% understand, is a lot simpler ;p.

That, and I don't see the point in trying to get high up a worldwide league table; there's always a bigger fish. Several thousand, usually.

well a month on and we've all had time to get used to the game...
I've been taking it slow and have only just ascended

now its a mad dash to the finish

if anyone feels like playing high level PvP now...or just any PvP at all...give me a shout and I'll deck you out in Guild colours

Ok, since you've gotten so far in the game, can you tell me how it compare to WoW?  I'm gonna buy a new computer soon (I hope), and don't know which of the two games to play in college...  GW is free and seems really in-depth, but WoW is fun and I know how to play it.   :miffed:

Title: Guild Wars
Post by: Everous on May 31, 2005, 05:26:12 PM
Guild Wars is really easy to play. Hard to master.

In terms of PvE, WoW beats the pants off it. It really is rather dreary to play PvE.

If you're in it for the PvP however, then it has no rival. Did you ever play Diablo?...well its like that, except more tactical, more about teamwork...and the classes are balanced. Kinda like a cross between Diablo and CS

And don't worry if you don't know how to play at the start. Join my guild and we'll train you up ;)

Title: Guild Wars
Post by: RipperRoo on May 31, 2005, 06:49:50 PM
Tbh I prefer WoW, not quite sure why, although GW is a much better looking game. But, I'd go with GW anyday, just because its got no monthly fee, and thats an instant winner.

Title: Guild Wars
Post by: Lord Lanair on June 02, 2005, 03:58:23 AM
Heh, good point, except I refuse to PvP in these types of games...  looks like I'll be sticking with WoW.  LOL

By the way Ev, what was so great about Diablo2?  Looking back on it, it was a pretty bad game.  :P

Post by: Everous on June 02, 2005, 09:16:22 AM
Didn't say it was all that great. Just that the setup is kind of similar, the actual combat however, is not. In guild wars theres actually a fully fleshed out single player campaign with cut scenes and character development and destroyable geometry and the like. This is because in reality its NOT massively multiplayer. All of the single player is done with groups of 2-8 people.

Ripper, you would get more into it if you stopped dawdling around Yak's bend...came on...and did some PvP >.>. Seriously, the plot takes SOME twists after Yak's bend, its a bit random for me...but my mate loves it. ...and erm...join my guild >.> I just started a new one :P

The fact that I have a level 17 at the Mission after the Wilds means nothing?

But, do you have to party with other people, or can you do things by yourself?  Oh, and how's the in-game economy (does it have AH's like WoW)... I've become a huge auction whore.  :D

don't really understand tbh...everything before my ascension was a blurr :P
besides...you get to level 20 automatically after ascension...so leveling up really dosen't mean much at all

no auction houses. But there are plenty of online auction places that function like ebay, but for GW. Although it dosen't really matter, the difference between a good sword and a crappy sword in PvP is slight. Its the skills and how you use them that counts. You don't HAVE to do anything with other people...but you're gonna get whupped if you don't

I've trying to get some group together to team up.
I've managed to get to level 8 by myself... and am still in the first section, so sad
