Post by: SS on April 18, 2006, 06:28:12 PM
I'm joining Lanair's Loony Land and getting a MacBook Pro!

2.0GHz dual CPU, 667MHz frontside bus, 1GB of PC2-5300 DDR2 RAM, 256MB Radeon X1600, 100GB SATA HDD, glowing keyboard... all in a square-foot, inch thick, 2.5kg silver box.

Yeah, but... triple-booting laptop > desktop with five-year-old OS.

Who cares, if the five year old OS still works?

Yaaaay.  Of course, I needed to send my mac into the shop yesterday to fix an overhearing problem, so I wont have it for a week... how reassuring.  LOL

It arrived today! :D

Not only does it look cool, but it was so cold I think my tongue might have stuck to it had I tried to lick it. Which I'm hoping will mean I wont have any problems with overheating.

Speaking of that- got any ideas to stop overheating... aside from using my icepack? It seems to get espeically hot if I use Azureus (I can stop), or burn CDs (not gonna stop)...  <_<

Me is jealous of SS's new cpu... because a mac bought last September is sooooo out of date...  LOL

Other than attaching giant heat-sinks to the case, with a couple of large fans to blow the warm air away, I've not got any helpful ideas. :(

Just remembered this quote from bash.org:

< robT> Name ONE thing that your windows comp can do that my MAC cant
< bawss> Right click.

=p.

Actually, just plug in a proper mouse and the right button & wheel both work instantly.

Apparently you can also get any additional buttons to work (back/forward/etc) just by installing some drivers, but I haven't yet tried that.

Something that my Mac laptop actually can't do is eject a CD when the OS isn't running. :(
Worse still: it doesn't have an over-ride hole to shove a paperclip in and force eject it.

Mmmm, that feature was my best friend on my old computer.  :D

 You make weird friends.

I think I've probably used The Hole more on my old Zip drive - 'twas often easier to poke it rather than connecting it up to a power source and/or waiting for Windows to boot.

Heh zip drives... I never found mine to be of any use...  :(

And my friends suit me just fine!  :D

Your friend is a hole Lanair  >_>...
If I got a laptop (which doesn't look too likely) it's be one of Macintosh's.
About laptops...  I've heard this story twice from two people with very little time in between; I don't want to type it out, it's boring, but the moral the story is to backup ALL your data before sending in your laptop in for repair, because it might not be there when you get it back :( . Another good idea would be to take pictures of your laptop to prove what kind of condition it was in before sending it in.
My friends laptop had a scratch  and it came back with a crack, and can’t do anything about it; he was a little preoccupied with getting over the fact that all his files were deleted.

The real moral of the story is not to send a laptop somewhere to get it repaired. :P

Oh and regularly backup all data on any computer, because neither hard-discs nor solid-state drives are invincible.

raid 0 = mirror raid, half storage
two 120GB drives and get only 120GB of storage

raid 5 = # of drives - 1 storage
three 120GB drives and get 240GB of storage

This all gets costly though <_<
I plan on getting two 500GB sata drives and raid 0 them :hehe:
soom day... :(

RAID is on-the-fly backing up. :P

And it's not so expensive these days - under £150 for 2x300GB 16MB SATA II (http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=316373)...
